Peace, Comfort, Great Food, Great Team Looking After You in The Most Glorious Surroundings

A newish villa built on old colonial lines, beautifully decorated but has achieved a really homely feel. We were there for a week’s yoga retreat and it was perfect. We opted for vegetarian food and had an incredible brunch after morning yoga, helped ourselves to fruit or snacks from the fridge throughout the day and then had a wonderful evening meal. The sea is just beyond the garden gate with deserted beaches stretching into the distance in both directions.

The manager/chef, Ramesh, and his team are just lovely… good fun, had lots of laughs, and looked after us so well. He gave us a cooking lesson one afternoon and if we particularly liked anything he’d cooked, he was very happy to take us into the kitchen to demonstrate how he did it.

All the rooms are lovely… the ones in the house quite grand, the garden cottage more basic but a real treat because of the seclusion. We booked a local masseur for a day and he was the best masseur I’ve ever had!

    10 Stars!

We have just returned from a wonderful two week stay at beautiful Meda Gedara. The occasion was our 50th Wedding Anniversary and our group consisted of my wife and I, our three children and five grandchildren, ranging from 19 to 8 years of age. We all voted it the best holiday ever. There was something for all ages, the pool with its fantastic slide, beach walks with the two friendly pet dogs, surf-boarding at a nearby beach, cricket on the huge lawn with some of the crew, visits to Yala National Park, a tea plantation, turtle hatchery, snake farm, beautiful Buddhist temple, all arranged seamlessly by Roshan and his wonderful team. For the night of our celebration, Roshan organised a feast in the yoga shala, complete with cake, fireworks, dancers, and a fire eater who persuaded one of the older boys to try (he did!)

The house is absolutely beautiful with antique furniture sourced in the UK, artefacts and art works, magnificent beds made locally, a well-stocked library and a large theatre room which was very popular in the evening with room for everyone on comfy couches. However spectacular the house, it still felt that it was your home.

Last but not at all least, the food is superb. Roshan is passionate about his cuisine and has trained in London. We ate Sri Lankan meals almost exclusively, and were usually presented with an array of at least twelve dishes each night. Roshan was helped by some of his crew who did prepare some of the meals and breakfasts and he would be proud of them and their talent. Nothing was too much trouble; a tea or coffee at an odd time or a mango smoothie for a thirsty child.

Meda Gedara has been created with love and attention to the smallest details. We would give ten stars, were that possible!

    From a Different Perspective

Meda Gedara, as amply testified by the heavenly eulogies and exotic songs of praise below, provides everything to make your heart and soul sing from its majestic setting overlooking the garnet sands and the hush hush waves of the Indian Ocean.

I could write at length about any one of its abundant gifts that lavishes upon each guest… the enchantingly splendid colonial, yet warm and invitingly serene, interior; the superlative service with its sparkling smiles and timely spoilings of coconut water and chilled cinnamon cloths; the colourfully irresistible, mouth-watering, tummy-tingling feasts, the breathtakingly verdant Babylonian garden-surrounds replete with monkeys and mellifluous birdsong which are filled at night time with exotic peacock, fire and cobra dancers.

But this cornucopia of delights is just a part of Meda Gedara’s sumptuous enchantments.

Behind, underneath and at Meda Gedara’s core is the crystal vision, honesty and pure love of a great woman, an awesome creative architect and the noble mother to a beautiful family of her own. Like so many of us who are feeling stretched and strained by Life’s vicissitudes, she knows that we need a safe and nurturing space where we can reconnect, recalibrate and remember who we are. When Life is deafeningly noisy and we can no longer hear our own heartbeat or what matters most, Meda Gedara brings us back to ourselves.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

What a stunning house in the most beautiful setting right in the Indian Ocean. It is an oasis of calm with the most lovely staff to take care of the guests. Greeted with cold face claoths and refreshing coconut water when returning from excursions guests are cared for at all times. We loved every stunning Sri Lankan dish from talented chef Roshan and his team. Tuk tuks, private drivers were easily ordered through the staff, laundry was taken care of, the pool was the most beautiful cooling temperature if the ceiling fans and air conditioners weren’t enough. Beach walks, yoga, movies, drinks on the terrace and the fabulous waterslide! Everything seems possible! Book, stay, love every moment.

Beautiful House, Outstanding Food & Service, Incredible Experience. With to-die-for Beach at End of Garden

The House: Large, Elegant, Comfortable, Stylish. In this anti-waste-&-Plastic era all parts of this house are made or very tastefully repurposed from natural materials. Beautiful accommodation in fabulous 4-poster beds, ensuites for all rooms. And the blissful private garden suite! Safes and fridges in the bedrooms for guest convenience, and wifi.

Everything is taken care of. The MG Team: Mr Roshan – Sri Lanka’s closest option for a michelin chef! We arrived with a list of 50 must-try Sri Lankan dishes and Roshan had 45 of them ticked off in 5 days!. The level of service from Roshan, Yasithe, Manjula, Udara, Niluka, Annula, Charith & Saguthe was perfection. Right there when you needed them, discreet when appropriate, charming, elegant service. Greeted each retun with fresh coconut water and chilled cinnamon face-cloths. Oh and did I mention the Beautiful food?!

The Pool: Waterslide for fun. Spa for bubbles. Perfect depth infinity pool for languishing in. It is a holiday pool second to none.

The Beach: Right at the end of the garden, through the cinnamon stick gate, is a to-die-for Indian Ocean beach with pink sand. This is now my go-to place in my memory

The Location: All the sights and sounds of tru Sri Lanka on your doorstep. Spice, Fishmarkets, Elephants, Colourful Harbours, Turtles, Tuk Tuks.

We stayed at MG with a group of friends for a week at the start of our first visit to Sri Lanka. We were so well looked after none of us wanted to leave. What we learned there about SL food and culture was invaluable during the following week as we travelled the country. Roshan and his team offer unparalleled hospitality. We loved the cool towel and coconut water after returning from a hot day touring.

The Best Villa in The World – Surely?

Step into paradise with this dream of a family villa (I say family – it can easily sleep three!). Stunningly designed with space for everyone, and utterly gorgeous throughout from the whopping big bedrooms to the enormous downstairs space. The kids LOVED the cinema room – a truly inspired touch. Our stay was made magical by host Roshan and his team of chefs and staff. We wanted for nothing, and it made our stay extra special. The twin pools are amazing, and the water slide a massive hit, of course! It’s the perfect space to base yourself in for day trips to Galle, surfing beaches, national parks to see elephants, tea plantations, turtle hatcheries, whale watching – basically everything you’d like to see in Sri Lanka. Definitely the best villa we’ve ever stayed in. Definitely the best villa in the world!

    Paradise in Sri Lanka

We have just returned from 10 amazing nights at the beautiful Meda Gedara. We were an extended family of 7 adults and 8 children (ages from 5 to 14) and the villa was absolutely perfect for us. We were given so much helpful information from Fiona and her team before arrival it made the booking process easy and allowed us to think about some achievable day trips from the villa with lots of children in tow.

The beautiful bedrooms had the perfect amount of beds for all the children and adults to sleep comfortably. The pool and the waterslide were in use everyday, the waterslide was possibly more popular with the adults than the children! The food from Roshan and his team was just perfect, from Sri Lankan breakfasts to Italian feasts; they were able to accommodate our Coeliac traveler with no fuss, including a delicious Gluten Free birthday cake.

The Villa is impeccably designed and decorated with beautiful objects but is still very livable and cosy. The veranda was the perfect spot for tea and coffee or afternoon cocktails overlooking the pool and the mesmerising ocean. When we wanted to go out on an excursion (beware, it is difficult to leave the amazing surrounds) Roshan organised everything for us which was fantastic. Roshan even organised our own fireworks for a special birthday celebration. I would highly recommend Meda Gedara, everyone in our group wanted to stay longer.

We were a large family all meeting up for Christmas from our various homes in Scotland, London Thailand and Australia! We could not have asked for a more beautiful setting with the most excellent staff and house. The rooms were colonial luxe at its’ best and the food was catered to our specific needs. The pool slide entertained our 9 small children. The staff played football with the kids, watched over them if we played in the sometimes dangerous waves, accommodated all our sleeping arrangements and this done with a smile. Nothing was too much trouble. We specifically loved communicating with the villa Manager Roshan. He organised our elephant safari, trips to the surf beach and shopping trips all with ease. “Fantastic!”

This is an amazing villa, and the photos really don’t do it justice! The place is so much bigger than it looks, but the high ceilings and large furniture makes it all look to scale. It’s not – the place is huge with enormous bedrooms and bathrooms, and vast open public areas, all beautifully set up and decorated.

The garden, pool and beautifully integrated water slide are a delight, and the gate at the bottom of the garden leads right down to the remarkable beach with it’s yellow, black and red sand. The waves can be very powerful so beware, but it’s a very picturesque beach.

The staff are great and we would all highly recommend the food packages available – you’re quite a long way from any restaurants, so it’s definitely your best option, and well priced compared to eating out at anywhere with similar quality food.

I really can’t recommend this enough – it’s a brilliant villa for a family get-together, or for a group of friends to use as we did when attending a friend’s wedding nearby.

“Magic from the moment we arrived….”

I feel somewhat ashamed about the tardiness of my review… there is a healthy excuse however, which is that for the first 2 months of my return, I missed Meda Gedara so much, that I couldn’t write about it! I just dreamt about it every night and missed it too much!

With all sincerity, I cannot express the magic that MG brings to its guests, from the minute you walk through the huge welcoming ornate traditional wooden doorway, to the minute you are dragged kicking and screaming out of it when its time to leave!

We were greeted by the most incredible MG team, offered fresh coconuts on arrival and taken to the terrace where we were faced by the vast Indian ocean, met by the breeze and consumed by the smells, sounds and colours of the tropics.
Heaven sent, the peace, tranquility and beauty started to work its magic.

Ben and I were then shown to our rather incredible Garden Room, which is a uniquely situated building away from the main house, offering us a little haven of our own.The location of the room led us straight onto the garden overlooking our yoga Shala, which then led down to the most magical beach in the world.

After what can only be described as our first night of dreamy sleep, made deeper by the sound of the ocean lapping the shore, we rose after sunrise and wandered through the wicker gateway at the end of the garden, for our daily meditation walk, in order to start our yoga practise each morning.

The enormity of the sea faced us, the untarnished nature, rawness of the surrounds, made the beach like no other. Not a hotel, bar, modern building, as far as the eye could see. We then followed our yoga practise, which was again, second to none. Intelligent, strong yoga, with a group of fabulous yogis! Having said that the retreats are designed for all levels and whether experienced or not, I believe the practise is available to all levels.

After deep relaxation at the end of the morning session, intensified by the sound of the garden waking up, the cicadas, the birds, the ocean, we would go back up to the main house, to feast on possibly the most delicious breakfast imaginable. Mastered by the king of cuisine – Roshan – we were served traditional Sri Lankan food offering the most extraordinary array of dishes, made up of layers of tastes and textures. Fresh, wonderful local produce that tasted out of this world. The best food ever!

Leaving the grounds of Media Gedara was actually quite hard, my excuse being that I have travelled around the area before…. the truth of the matter however, was that swaying in a hammock creaking to and fro between silhouetted palm trees overlooking the ocean, swimming in the infinity pool, whooshing down the crazy yet aesthetically hidden waterslide (so much fun!), or diving in and out of the waves on our doorstep, felt incredibly luxurious in between yoga sessions…and it didn’t really feel necessary to go much further!

We did actually venture to the local, very beautiful tranquil surf beach, one whereby my boyfriend Ben learnt to surf, which was a big big ‘tick’ on his list of things to do!
There are a million things to do there, but we got rather consumed by all that MG offers.
It is the ‘love’ with which the villa has been created, that is felt in every room, seen in every piece of furniture, experienced with every detail,

Everything is considered meticulously, yet it feels effortless, calm and the level of relaxation that you feel there is felt through this clever clever creation.
The villa is more than luxurious, yet feels like home. This is the magic of Media Gedara. We felt blessed to have experienced staying in this amazing place. We absolutely want to go back there! Don’t give it a second thought…go!

“A truly enchanting slice of paradise. Somerset Maugham would have approved.”

Another Sri Lankan visit over. I keep wishing for some divine intervention that keeps me here.

I’ve experienced some amazing properties in previous visits but Meda Gedara offers something different, a different vibe if you will. I don’t have children but to watch my friends with theirs, lapping up every ounce of unique MG energy, playing cricket and rounders, charging down the gigantic water slide through the bounty of hibiscus into the plunge pool was quite something.

When I wished for it, I was able to wander off down to the bottom of the garden and lie in one of the hammocks with the Indian Ocean front view and surround-sound.
I should also add that I still had full WiFi coverage at the bottom of the garden, much as I tried for a digital-detox.

MG is all things to all people. If you’re after a creative retreat, this is the spot, if you’re on family holidays, maybe inter-generational, MG offers hot and cold running everything, a stockpile of interesting books, magazines, games and movies. It is also, of course, a romantic idyll.

The ocean-facing bedroom suites are enormous with hugely comfortable beds and beautifully finished bathrooms. The back of the house, facing a jungle of palms, brightly coloured birds and other flora and fauna is geared towards children with fun bunks, single four-poster beds and again, superb bathrooms. And I love the laundry chute for all its ease.
I managed to nab the garden suite with its adjoining daybed and again, direct ocean views. Bliss.

Down the beautifully curved and carved teak staircase the endless entertaining space has a lovely flow to it, sprinkled stylishly as it is with artwork and rich pickings from world travels. Evening drinks under the stars whilst listening to the ocean roar away or just inside whilst watching the rains clear the decks. No sitting and dripping here, the ocean breeze supplies a constant waft.

Did I mention the cashew nut curry, the okra curry, the kottu, the tiger prawns, the citrus salad dressings? Who doesn’t love an elastic waistband, right?
Head chef and House Manager Roshan is the purveyor of gastronomic creativity and boy does he provide. He’ll also give cookery lessons and take you to the fish market to pick lunch out if you like.

Of course there is an infinity pool in which to swim it all off and the yoga sala to stretch it all out and get to work on your Solar Plexus. If you’re a committed yogi, Om Ceylon yoga retreats are held here, info on the website. That said, you could organise your own retreat, yogis, writers, photographers, painters, all, the foundations are already here.

A day trip or two should include lovely Galle, a Unesco World Heritage Site with the ramparts around the old Fort a great place to walk off lunch. This is a gemologist’s heaven – the streets are lined with stores selling Ceylon sapphires, aquamarines and yellow diamonds, you name it. If you’re looking to source a stone, Galle could be your treasure trove.

Meanwhile, back at MG and a quiet word to Roshan and sparkly-clean Tuk Tuks appear within minutes to whisk us off to the surf beach 10 mins up the road, Hiriketiya. Lined with beach bars and speakers proving a cool soundtrack to your white water chase, this little bay is a must.

When we arrived back via a watermelon daiquiri – recommended by the way – Roshan and the team were at the door offering iced water, chilled fruit juices and cold towels. You thought it, they had already done it and with smiles that could light the whole island.
It’s all really rather serene, things just happen rather nicely at Meda Gedara.

There are many stunning foreign outposts that wow you but I felt the need to write all this about MG as it had a profound effect on me and I’ve had a few turns around the globe discovering exotic nuggets like this. Now it’s your turn.

It was amazing, from the moment we arrived to the moment we left (even though we didn’t want to leave!) The team were all superb especially Roshan and Manju – they looked after us so well. The food was out of this world.

We fell completely in love with Sri Lanka, what a wonderful country! – everyone is so friendly…

Hats off to the owners – the Villa is outstanding, they have done an amazing job – the interiors are exquisite – every little detail thought about – and they clearly have a very tasteful eye for interior design! everything was just perfect.

I have been to some of the worlds best resorts, but this is right up there… its probably best described as a ‘Private Villa Hotel’ – all the luxuries of a 5 star resort (including water slide!) and the very attentive staff – in the privacy of your own beachfront villa. We had everything from Spa treatments to beach BBQ’s and even our own private fireworks display – an unbelievable holiday – will definitely be returning!

We have created some memories that will live with us forever – Meda Gedara will always have a fond place in our hearts… the children smiled not stop all week – thankyou so much!

    “Pure blissful luxury”

From the moment we arrived with our whole family to the welcome of the smiling staff waiting in the drive armed with cool drinks and cool towels, we knew we were in for a fantastic holiday in this dream of a place. We visited one wildlife park and the old town of Galle and a tea plantation, but we really did not need to go out of the villa and its grounds. Set in a beautiful garden, the two swimming pools caused our five grandchildren (and everyone else too) endless fun, particularly the water slide. Roshan, the chef and manager, could not have been more attentive to our needs, as well as joining in with all our games and fun. A perfect place for a perfect family holiday.

“Absolutely recommended, top notch, unadulterated bliss”

I am unsure how or which superlatives to shower on this Shangri La, nestled away from the road, there is little on the approach to belie what a delightful paradise awaits behind the gates of Villa Meda Gedara.
The situation is breath-taking; staff bearing huge smiles, cold towels and drinks, welcomed us into this palatial villa. The beautiful terrace leading down to one of two or three pools, depending on how one looks at it.

A spacious Yoga Shala sits with a commanding view of the Indian Ocean amongst the leafy foliage. It pretty much has it all, a stunning beach to walk on, especially when others are torturing themselves with Yoga sessions. Supremely attentive staff led by the head chef/manager Roshan, he can do anything, a bit like a wizard really.
The cuisine was divine, the local curries and dishes were superb, again Roshan and his team bowled us over with his rich and delightful repertoire. There really was something for everyone and I fear my waist proves it.

The surrounding area is charming, tuk-tuk rides to beaches and towns, for trips further afield we enjoyed the “Golden Lounge”, a mini bus with palatial trim and blast freezer air conditioning just when it was needed. All very well but I think all I really wanted was to get back to the delights of Meda Gedara and those wonderful staff.
The bedrooms are luxurious with beds to loose your partner in, and sleep comes fast with the sound of the ocean in the background. Water slides at night into pools twinkling with lights is a must, I’ve never laughed so much in my life.

Absolutely recommended, top notch, unadulterated bliss.
