Surfing is one of the most popular sports in the world – wherever there is a break, there is a rider! Along with learning the necessary the skills to master it, the eternal question of any intermediate surfer is – where can I improve my surfing in Bali? Bali has such a wide-variety of beaches and breaks, and could have the answers you are looking for.

Kuta, Seminyak and Canggu Beaches

Kuta, Seminyak and Canggu Beaches, are all fantastic surf spots for beginners, and are also perfect for the intermediates when the swell is bigger. Moreover, these surf spots (except for Canggu) are beach breaks, which means that there are both left and right waves to practice on.

Kuta Reef

Kuta Reef is a general name of three surf spots which include Kuta reef (the first area), Airport Lefts and Airport Rights. This is a marvelous place for intermediate surfers, but not easily available. To get to Kuta Reef, you need to take a fisherman’s boat that go cruising from Kuta beach leaving nearby the Discovery Shopping Mall. The boat costs 50.000 Rs per person two-ways and brings you to any surf spot of your choice, so make use of it and play in the surf until you find the best and most challenging conditions for your skillset.

Balangan

Balangan beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Bali. Located on the South of the Bukit peninsula, it gives a perfect reef break, where intermediates can look to improve on their style and capabilities. In big swells it can be very challenging for anyone who is not confident about their surfing skills, so far better to choose the smaller days and get enough time in riding the waves accordingly. Also, there is a beautiful coral reef underneath, so during the low tide, Balangan turns into an expert level surf spot only. Nevertheless, I recommend to stay there and watch the surreal lunar landscape that appears when the water moves and you can see the coral.

Dreamland

Dreamland beach is Balangan’s neighbour. You can even walk from one beach to another when the tide is very low. Dreamland is an impressive beach break, very popular but also very fun. It has a white sand beach and groomed area all around. In fact, Dreamland became a semi-private resident’s territory, so if you want to get there, you have to leave your transport and a local minibus will bring you to the beach.

Nusa Dua

Miles of empty beaches and some of the best villas and hotels with stunning views is the foundation of Nusa Dua. The beach there is protected by a gorgeous coral reef that makes this place equally valuable for swimmers and surfers alike. Nusa Dua has several surf spots, and they are all perfect for intermediates, however, don’t overstretch yourself and be careful with the sharp reef on the bottom.

Sanur

Sanur surf spot is a reef break, and it can be challenging with a big swell. Usually, there are surfers of both intermediate and advanced levels, as it gives a perfect wave and relatively “friendly” conditions without too much chop. Caution yourself by being aware of the boats, which depart and arrive from other islands, as their route is quite close to the surf spot as they rocket past!

Surfer Riding the Waves in Bali

Intermediate surfers in Bali are the luckiest on the island due to the variety of waves and accessibility of mid-level surf spots. Surfers may ride the Kuta and Seminyak waves, Sanur and Balangan, all of which will definitely help improve your skills. Maybe the hardest thing to do in the end is to choose your favourite out of these perfect surf spots!
