Villa Melati Living
The graceful architecture of this thatched hideaway is essentially Balinese. The property is constructed of traditional local materials, with contemporary style incorporated into the high-quality fixtures and fittings.
Living Room
Designed to harmonise with the environment, the pavilions and viewing balconies offer a blend of open-air living and air-conditioned comfort. The colonial-style furniture is complemented by traditional batik fabrics and antique artefacts, while the 5000 square metres of terraced gardens incorporate a delightful lookout pavilion, a converted rice barn, and a water-garden of cascading ornamental pools.
Dining Room
A dining room has a dining table that can comfortably seat 6 guests. Adjacent to the dining area is a kitchen.
Garden & Pool
The infinity-edge swimming pool appears to overflow into the forest; its stone deck enhanced with sun-loungers, oriental parasols, palms, pots and flowering shrubs. Across the valley, broad-canopied acacia trees, stately lontar, umbrella ferns, rippling banana leaves and giant bamboo mingle with tall coconut palms. Paddlings of ducks forage for tasty morsels on the valley floor, dragonflies glide on the thermals, and cicadas chirrup to the accompaniment of an orchestra of birdsong.

Villa Melati Layout
To reach the villa from the private car park entails a descent of 82 steps – this is what makes the setting of the house unique. No sounds from the road – only the sound of the rushing River Ayung, far below in the valley. We have added a rack-and-pinion funicular lift that carries 4-5 people, which is always available when the steps are daunting.
Villa Melati is composed of two wings, in a V-shaped plan, encompassing an inner courtyard garden and a fan-shaped swimming pool that appears to float above the treetops. The flowing design oozes a profound feeling of calm, while the breathtaking, birds-eye view of the river reflects a grand sense of scale.

Location
Villa Melati is situated on the Sayan Ridge on the outskirts of Ubud, one hour’s drive from Denpasar’s ‘Ngurah Rai’ international airport, 40 minutes from the coast, and convenient for tours all over the island. The setting, 300 metres above sea level in the foothills of the central mountain range, presents a fresher, more pleasant climate than the southern coastal regions. The Sayan Ridge is also the dramatic location of some of the Island’s most luxurious boutique hotels, including Four Seasons and Amandari.
The remarkable town of Ubud is Bali’s centre for fine arts and cultural performances, and the surrounding villages are home to many highly-accomplished Balinese painters, dancers, musicians and carvers. Ubud was originally an important source of medicinal herbs and plants. In fact, the name is derived from the Balinese word for medicine. Ever since the German artist, Walter Spies, settled here in the 1930s, the town has been a magnet for writers, art collectors, connoisseurs, mystics, and people actively involved in art, anthropology, music, dance, architecture, environmentalism and alternative healing. The area is encompassed by most of the features that draw people to this unique and beautiful island – gorgeous scenery dotted with ancient temples and palaces. Ubud’s visitors are those in search of culture, nature and inspiration.

The immense beauty of Villa Melati is captivating

Heavenly – and great for families
So much to be said about this place. This was my 6th trip to Bali and by far the most memorable thanks to this stunning location. The villa is ideal for a group of four but we managed to sleep 10 thanks to the extra external villa and two beds in the loft of the dining room.
The staff were exceptional and the food so good that we seldom dined out. Note that the entrance is a bit hard to find on arrival as the villa is not publicly indicated. But being tucked off a side street is part of the charm as you are blissfully removed from the whir of mopeds zipping around Ubud.
The location is almost identical to the Amandari and 4 Seasons as you have the same stunning view of the river valley below. But value for money, this place is far superior to either! We had massages regularly scheduled on site overlooking the rice terraces below.

“An absolutely magical experience!”
My husband and I stayed at Villa Melati in June 2015, loved every minute of it and highly recommend it. The only way to describe it is: Wow! Its private magical setting with breathtaking views of the Ayung River and rice fields below, makes for an unforgettable stay.
The bedrooms are very spacious, beautifully appointed in Balinese decor, immaculately clean, overlooking an infinity pool, a private oasis surrounded by rainforest.
But it is the staff at Villa Melati that made our stay even more special, a team of five making every effort to see that our stay was truly exceptional. We felt very spoiled.
Although there are plenty of wonderful restaurants in Ubud we opted to stay at Villa Melati several nights to sample Dayu’s wonderful Indonesian and Western dishes, served outside, beside the pool.
A car is available to take you shopping in Ubud itself, which is only 7 minutes away. We highly recommend taking a day trip with Ida Bagus to discover the many parts of Bali still relatively untouched by tourism.
Our only regret is that we couldn’t stay longer, but next time we will.
