When you dream of staying in a villa on the beach, your imagination starts with the sound of breaking waves. On the Rocks takes the dream to a whole new level! Why you ask? Well, the name really gives it away – the villa sits on a rugged outcrop with beach access either side of giant rocks that meet the ocean.
A small contingent of our team had the pleasure of staying “On the Rocks” for a couple of nights and we absolutely loved the soundtrack… and more!
Capacious Capacity
Our travelling party comprised 12 adults, so we needed space… a lot of space! Upon arrival we entered a large atrium with double-height ceiling, which flowed onto a vast open-plan living area with large pool in the background. Perfect.
We spread ourselves out while relaxing and ate meals together around one table. This is precisely what we think a large villa needs to achieve – the ability to bring people together as well as allow for individual privacy. The bedrooms are also generous in size, which made everyone very happy.
Where Exactly?
On the Rocks is located directly on the beach in Unawatuna, a coastal village just 5 kilometres southeast of Galle. Although we had direct access to the beach, it was not suitable for swimming immediately in front of the villa due to strong currents. A few of our team strolled along the beach and found a calmer spot for a swim.
Socially Situated
We spent an afternoon visiting Galle Fort and returned early evening for drinks at the famous Angel Beach Club – which is only 100 metres walk along the beach. In other words, we think On the Rocks is perfectly positioned for groups who want to socialise together and explore Sri Lanka in equal measure.
Chef Service
With the exception of one meal, we ate breakfast, lunch and dinner in the villa. Every meal was perfectly prepared and served quickly to ensure all of us were sharing meals together.
We opted for a buffet-style dinner on our second night so that everyone could help themselves to a range of delicious Sri Lankan dishes. Naturally, this is a practical way of catering to different tastes and was not a problem for On the Rocks’ talented chef who seemingly cooked many, many dishes all day long!
Beachfront Bliss
Now let’s return to what really makes a beachfront villa magical – uninterrupted, gorgeous, privacy! On the Rocks has several lovely areas to simply enjoy the majestic views of the Indian Ocean. These include a balcony on the top floor of the main pavilion, pool deck and sun loungers on the sand right in front of the beach.
A Large Villa for a Large Group
We’ve arranged dozens of trips for large groups “On the Rocks” for years now and can safely attest to the suitability of the wonderful villa for a large group of travellers.
