Nestled along Sri Lanka’s stunning southern coastline, Koggala offers everything from beachside fun to cultural attractions and beyond. Planning your first trip to the area? Here are the best things to do in and around Koggala.

Koggala & Unawatuna Beach

Sri Lanka is known for offering some of the most beautiful beaches on the planet and Koggala Beach is no exception. This long stretch of white sand offers a dreamy setting for sunset walks or simply working on your tan. For safe swimming conditions, your best bet is to drive over to neighbouring Unawatuna Beach, which is widely regarded one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka. The drive over from Koggala Beach to Unawatuna takes just 10 minutes.

Koggala Lake

In Koggala, you don’t just have to settle for the salty waves of the ocean. Koggala Lake is a vast freshwater lagoon located just a few minutes from the beach. You can explore the lake by joining a boat tour. This is a very relaxing way to while away an afternoon. Boat rides on Koggala Lake usually include a stop at the tiny Temple Island where visitors can witness monks paying their respects to the shrine. Other islands on Koggala Lake include the descriptively named Spice, Cinnamon and Bird islands.
