Ayr Castle 1922 Living
The story behind the property is quite extraordinary. The castle was originally built by a tea planter as a testament of his love for a Scottish noblewoman. To win over his one true love, the planter modelled the property after majestic Scottish castles. While that love story was not to be, the castle has stood the test of time and still offers the same grandeur and sweeping views it did a century ago.

The living room embodies the old-world charm of the property. The space features tiled stone floors covered with oriental carpets. An elegant arrangement of sofas and armchairs sits at the centre of the room, with ornate vintage pieces adding to the historic feel of the space.

A grand archway separates the dining area from the living room lounge. The polished timber table can accommodate the whole group for long and luxurious meals prepared by the villa’s culinary team.

The estate is completely immersed in greenery, revealing gorgeous views from its hilltop vantage point. From the main house, steps cascade down to generous lawns, eventually leading down to a pristine blue pool. You didn’t think you would be expected to clean while enjoying time off did you? All of our villas include housekeeping to tidy up the villa, arrange the laundry services, wash up and simply make sure you don’t lift a finger whilst on holiday with the family.

Butlers are on hand daily to assist with serving during meal times and attend to other guest requirements throughout your stay.

The villa’s skilled private chef will happily prepare anything from the Western, Asian, vegetarian and children’s suggestion menus, as well as discuss special requests and dietary requirements.

Ayr Castle 1922 is located in Labugama near Padukka in western Sri Lanka. Surrounded by a rubber plantation and gazing over misty hilltops, the villa offers a truly exceptional setting made for rest and relaxation. You can enjoy leisurely walks and hikes around the plantation. The surrounding area is simply breathtaking with wild waterfalls and sacred temples hidden amid the greenery. For exciting day trips, the capital city of Colombo is about 90 minutes away while historic Galle Fort can be reached in just over two hours. Mirissa Beach and the ancient city of Kandy are both about three hours away.

We have stayed in Ayr1922 for a few nights with my husband. The place is located on the very top of the hill with spectacular view to its surrandings. To get there ( there is a rubber plantation along side the road) can seem tricky , but it’s really not. We drove there by ourselves and I can say it’s a scenic drive and really worth it!
It’s located in the middle of nowhere.
After spending more than 20 days in various areas in Sri Lanka we really felt that we arrived to a place out of a fairy tale! No noise, no pollution really a sanctuary in the middle of the jungle, with all the conviences from the modern world you could need! They have a huge pool as well!
The breakfast is spectacular Chef Mahesh accomodates all your allergies and if you are a picky eater like me they will try their best to help you out with that as well! I got my favorite sri lankan dessert made by them as well which made me super happy as it’s more popular in other regions. The team who handles f&b Dinuja and Ravindu are also super nice and they make a good atmosphere with smiles always on their faces and they really was out of their way to make out stay special!
Before arrival Dulshan ( manager ) gave us the best way to reach the villa and he was super responsive answering all our questions. Upon arrival the whole team was very welcoming and nice, and Dulshan immediately showed us the place and gave us tips what to see around ( you should not miss the Botincals gardens!)
I’d also like to add we were there during the Iranian war with our flights canceled, they handled it super flexible and made us feel like at home.
The rooms are super spacious, and they do have a really good mattress. We have stayed in one of the rooms upstairs and the balcony is a dream just to sit outside relax and watch the sunset. Also, if you like animals here you can watch a monkey family’s daily life from a foot step away, many chipmunks and beautiful birds can be seen! The cautioned us about the mosquitos, but there weren’t so many at all so don’t worry about that!
We have been in Sri Lanka 5x times and I can truly say it’s a really special place, and we cannot wait to return to this piece of calm in the middle of nowhere. So happy we found this Villa as it’s really a whole other level of experience for our time in the country.

Ayr Castle was the perfect place to end our trip to Sri Lanka. It’s a quiet spot surrounded by nature, where you can stop to take in the scenery and learn about the country’s history. The Edinburgh Suite is spacious and perfect for families. It also has a magnificent, comfortable terrace overlooking the garden where we watched a breathtaking sunset. The staff was very kind, especially Sadeesha and Chef Mahesh, who adapted the dishes to our gluten-free needs. Highly recommended!
