Rice House Living

Rice House offers the perfect fusion of rich history and modern living. Surrounded by picture-perfect paddy fields and pretty-as-can-be palm trees, the villa pays homage to historic Sri Lankan homes with its timeless design and antique building materials. Wandering through the rooms and lazing on the shaded verandas, it’s easy to imagine you have taken a step back in time – or stepped out of time altogether. The cool floors are covered in terracotta tiles and the rooms are connected through antique doors. Yet all the while, there are little thoughtful touches and a sprinkling of contemporary luxe that root you in the here and now.

Living Room

The living room takes pride of place at the heart of the villa, flanked by a breezy furnished veranda on either side. With tiled floors and a sky-high ceiling elevated with king trusses, the room exudes a historic ambiance that’s further enhanced with antique doors and windows. The furniture by contrast is refreshingly modern, with two sleek grey sofas framed by striking contemporary paintings adorning the walls. The setup feels steeped in history yet very of-the-moment.

Dining Room

The villa’s sturdy solid wood dining table is positioned outside on the veranda, providing picture-perfect views of the rice paddies as you dine. The dining table is surrounded by benches and dining chairs and can easily accommodate the whole group. Behind the dining area, doors open to a well-appointed and beautifully styled kitchen which is fitted with all the culinary essentials. Need more options? There is another dining area on the second veranda, this one looking over a lovely courtyard.

Garden

Rice House is set amidst tropical gardens that feel almost magical. In this Sri Lankan Eden, you are surrounded by the peaceful sounds of nature while dreamy palm trees sway gently in the breeze which sends ripples across the zero-edge swimming pool. If you’re lucky, you might just spot a peacock rustling around the garden. The pool opens to postcard-ready views of the villa’s namesake – idyllic rice paddies glowing in endless shades of green. You could easily spend an entire day lounging on one of the sunbeds by the pool, admiring the serene beauty that surrounds. If you prefer a place in the shade, don’t worry: the villa has two breezy verandas to choose from. Feeling a bit more active? The lawns are perfect for a game of badminton or boules – just ask the staff to set it up for you.
