Shochikubai
Overview

East meets West and quirky meets cosy in Shochikubai! This cool concrete chalet hides a whole world of whimsy inside its austere walls. There’s a traditional tatami room for guests to relax in, a sunken dining area for enjoying sumptuous meals and a fireplace to keep the whole group nice and toasty. The chalet spans two floors and mainly relies on monochrome tones, with pops of colour and local art and textiles adding life and colour. If Shochikubai has a lot going on design wise, it also wows with its location. The chalet is tucked in a cosy nook of Furano, an up and coming ski resort that has all the powder and beauty of Niseko – minus the overwhelming crowds!

Shochikubai Living

Introducing equal touches of edge and whimsy, Shochikubai is not your average chalet. This two-storey structure forgoes all cookie cutter cliches and creates a vibe that’s all its own. The chalet features ample Japanese influences – check out the tatami lounge and the sunken dining area. There is also an undeniable cosiness and a plush level of comfort to the place. Nothing beats a night spent in cuddled up by the fire, watching as the snow falls outside… except maybe a day spent scaling Furano’s hidden gem slopes!

Living Room

Practically the whole lower floor of the chalet is dedicated to relaxed socialising, laidback entertainment and yummy dining. The living room is nice and spacious and features polished hardwood floors that are beautifully juxtaposed by the light streaming in through the full wall windows. There’s a plush red sofa by the window where you can drink in the views while enjoying the warm glow of the fireplace. Two coco brown armchairs provide additional seats when needed. Right next to the living room is a cosy tatami lounge room where guests can kick back on zaizu chairs while watching movies on the massive flatscreen TV.

Dining Room

Thanks to its sunken design, the dining table is one of the coolest Japanese elements in the chalet. The dining area is incorporated to the living room so you can keep the conversation going and the good times rolling throughout the day. The full wall windows ensure beautiful views regardless of the season. Also included in the same space is the villa’s all white kitchen that’s decked out with all the necessary appliances and kitchenware.

It was my first time visiting Furano in the last week of November 2023 and I had the opportunity to stay here which is one of the most beautiful chalets I ever stayed at  and I fell in love with it. This is walking distance to cafes, bars, and restaurants and only 10 minutes walk North to Furano’s nearest ski lifts. Wish I could have gone back. Definitely recommend must book!

We had a really long drive from Hirafu to Furano so we felt so tired. However, it’s all gone when entering the property. It is spacious with unique furniture and large windows along with tatami room where we can lay down while watching TV. The bedroom is so comfortable and I had a really nice sleep after a long day. The next morning, I was so surprised by the sight of pine trees covered in a blanket of snow which is truly enchanting and breathtaking. I really want to stay here longer next time.

Staying at Shochikubai in Furano, Hokkaido was truly a majestic experience. We were treated to a snowfall of around 40-50 cm during our stay, adding to the enchanting winter atmosphere. One of the highlights was the delightful dinner enjoyed with my friends at the Japanese-style dining table, where our feet were comfortably nestled under the floor with the heater, creating a cozy and memorable setting.

Our stay at Shochikubai was delightful! I love the sunken dining table and tatami TV room – both perfectly encapsulate the comfort and tradition of Japan – a seamless blend of modern comfort and authentic Japanese aesthetics. The forest views out the back are fabulous – whether you’re enjoying a meal, lounging, or simply taking in the scenery, the view adds serenity. So much serenity ;)

Super comfortable chalet with fabulous forest views out the back. I love the sunken dining table which is surprisingly comfortable to dine at. The kitchen is fully equipped and has everything we needed. Shops, cafes and restaurants are all really close and a 2 minute drive to the lifts. Amazing value!
