The Brando Overview

The water surrounding The Brando reveals every shade of blue: light, turquoise, aquamarine, indigo, royal, dark, cobalt. It’s not surprising that when Marlon Brando penned his memories, he had trouble finding words to describe the mesmerising colours of his secret atoll. After lengthy discussions with his partner, Richard Bailey, Marlon finally decided to open his doors – or should we say, airstrip – to discerning travellers looking to experience the island getaway of a lifetime. Today, the only way into this island paradise is via a helicopter or on the resort’s dedicated plane. The Brando offers its guests a seamless experience of crossing over from Mother Nature into the privacy of exclusive space, in style. The island is home to one, two and three-bedroom villas, gourmet restaurants and a heavenly spa and offers endless opportunity for immersing yourself in the stunning local nature – both on land and underwater – and unique Polynesian culture and way of life.

The Brando Resort

Recognised by National Geographic as one of the premier eco-lodges in the world, The Brando has won an impressive number of awards for its sustainability concept and luxurious beauty. This stunner of an eco-resort is located on the atoll of Tetiaroa, in French Polynesia.

Restaurants

The Brando is home to three gourmet restaurants. The two original restaurants offer a feast of Polynesian-inspired dishes, East/West fusion and classic French cuisine. All dishes are prepared using fresh ingredients, with fruit and vegetables harvested from the resort’s gardens and fish caught from the surrounding waters. The newest addition is Nami teppanyaki restaurant where Chef Kaito Nakamura introduces guests to authentic Japanese flavours.

Spa

The resort’s Varua Te Ora Polynesian Spa is a healing sanctuary built on tranquil pond at the heart of the atoll. The spa draws inspiration from the Royal family who traditionally retreated here to submerge themselves in rejuvenating wellness rituals. The word Varua translates as “soul” and the spa truly is a Polynesian sanctuary for mind, body and soul.

    “Paradise found”

Absolutely magical! We stayed here 4 nights and did our elopement ceremony at The Brando and it’s a beautiful resort. I would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for paradise here on earth. Pristine conditions within the resort and in the villas.

    “Paradise”

The Brando exceeded every expectation that my wife and I had coming in. It was the second part of our honeymoon, the first of which was spent at the Four Seasons in Bora Bora. We were very happy to have had this as the second leg of our trip because it was just so special that nothing would have been able to compare if we went here first.

The service is so exceptional that it’s almost difficult to describe. Everyone will know your name when you arrive. The staff does a wonderful job of making it feel like they can (and they very well might be able to) do/get/make anything you want, but they do it in a way that doesn’t make the resort feel stuffy. To give an anecdotal example- while my wife and I were at dinner at The Beachcomber our first night there, one of our favorite songs (more of a pop punk song, not super mainstream) started to play and I told her that I wouldn’t have been surprised if they researched what kind of music we liked and wanted to play it for us. I think that probably was not the case, but I hope the fact I believe that it is a real and significant possibility speaks to how highly I thought of the service.

The food at the resort is also incredible. Having come from Bora Bora where the food was better than expected, but nothing amazing, it felt like we were back eating at some of NYC’s best restaurants. Our dinner at Les Mutines was incredibly impressive. The Beachcomber was a little more laid back with a less complex, but more robust menu (though the desserts were phenomenal and could have easily fit in on the Les Mutines menu). For breakfast, we enjoyed it through in room dining and had it set up outside which was always a great way to start the day. Bob’s Bar is also a great place to grab a drink and/or eat some lunch.

We only went out on one excursion, the Ultimate Tour, which I would highly recommend. If you do go on this tour, you might want to bring some bug spray as we did get some bites on one of the motus where we walked around for a bit. We also walked the Discovery Trail by ourselves which was really neat, and I’m sure would have been even more interesting were we with a guide.

The spa is beautiful. My wife and I got a couples massage and I had a gentleman whose name is escaping me right now as my masseuse. As someone who doesn’t really like massages because I never get enough pressure, I can say that this one was great and exactly how I wanted it. My wife enjoyed hers as well. We also did a private yoga practice with Naiki (whose name I hope I’m spelling correctly) on our deck on the back of the villa. She was incredible and this could not come any more highly recommended.

If you’re lucky enough to have a chance to go here, you absolutely won’t regret it. The Brando is the most special place we have ever been. Everything about it is amazing.

“Best place you will ever stay”

We spent three nights at the four seasons in bora bora and four at the brando. My wife’s view was that the four seasons is a great place for a holiday, but the brando is like heaven. I have never been to heaven but i have been to 8-9 different aman resorts and lots of other fine resorts and I would have to agree with my wife that its the best we have ever been to. the huts are very refined places to stay with a view of the blue blue waters and the beach in front from every room.

My wife especially loved the outdoor bathtub. One thing that makes the brando in a class of its own is the food. Generally when i stay at a high end resort I have low expectations for food compared to nice places we go out to eat in Tokyo. The brando food was just special all around from the Cheeseburgers(awesome) to the fine french food at the main restaurant.

The excursions were great as well. We did the reef quest and snorkeled through a maze or coral, the ultimate cruise which took us to a tiny island at the far end of the atoll for a walk in the woods, and we wanted to go the bird quest but did not have the time. We rode our bikes around the island, and paddled our kayaks around the island as well. Hard to say that it was good value for the 3500 euro a night we paid, but in fact I thought it was very good value. I would like to go back.

    “Heaven on Earth”

I went to The Brando for 5 nights last June with my husband and lord only knows why it’s taken so long for me to get around to writing a review. I think I was overwhelmed with things to say about it immediately post trip so I just put it off.

We started out with a couple of nights on the Mainland as I imagine most people do as there are only 2 flights/day to Tetiaroa. I was anxious about the small plane but it was fine and super-professional flight team just as there would be anywhere else…plus 2 pilots which was unexpected but very reassuring to a nervous flyer. We were warmly welcomed on arrival and this was quite ceremonious and a lovely touch and a great way to start our time there. The resort is just beautiful and our 1 bedroom Villa was stunning and just the ultimate in indulgence and luxury. It was spacious and beautiful with plenty of wardrobe space and an amazing bathroom (with outdoor bath). The outdoor area was quite extensive with different sections including of course the pool which was fantastic.

We loved our pool! And then of course the location of the villa’s are right on the beach and the beach was gorgeous. White sand, clear blue water…very warm to swim in. We had the all inclusive package which includes 1 spa treatment per day (from memory), food and drink (but you had to pay for certain premium items but we felt no need to upgrade from what was included) and daily excursions. We did the Ultimate Tour but none of the others as they didn’t really appeal.

I would highly recommend the Ultimate Tour which was superb. Our guide was very personable and knowledgeable. I had all the spa treatments for our stay as hubby didn’t want any and these were mostly enjoyable. The spa is an incredible facility and feels like it’s own little world. I did find one of my massages overly vigorous (I think it was the Taurus)..but that is probably just personal preference. Also, the steam bath ritual was a bit uncomfortable as was lying on a hard surface. The spa is amazing and so are the therapists but a little bit of fine tuning could perhaps be done in regards to comfort in the steam baths.

One of the highlights of our time at The Brando was Bobs Bar….we loved Bobs Bar and spent quite a lot of time there. We also thoroughly enjoyed a Polynesian performance one night as this was excellent. I was expecting to find it pretty boring as am some-what used to these sorts of performances but it surpassed my expectations…even my husband was enthralled and he usually doesn’t enjoy that sort of thing at all.
There are 3 boutique stores at The Brando including a pearl store. All are lovely and I ended up buying items from all 3. Hubby loves his Bobs Bar T-shirt. The dining venues are gorgeous. Food and service were both good but, to be honest, not as good as we have had elsewhere (ie…in comparable properties/restaurants in NZ).

We really loved our stay despite some slight glitches with service at times and food occasionally being disappointing. We can’t wait to go back as this place truly is heaven on earth.

    “Stunning”
If there is heaven on earth this place must be it. We stayed for 3 days at the end of our Tahitian 40th Anniversary trip and we saved the best for last. From the moment we arrived we had smiles on our faces. The Villa was magnificent and huge with a gorgeous bedroom and bath, and separate living room and even a media room. The pool outside our door was very luxurious albeit cooler than the ocean for a real swim. Every morning a delicious made-to-order breakfast was set up on our beautiful outdoor dining table. Bob’s Bar was a cool place to hang out or have lunch and the food and drinks were exceptional. I highly recommend the Caesar salad with king crab. We went for the all-inclusive but in hindsight maybe we should have gone for the cheaper a la carte pay-as-you go itinerary because it may have been cheaper. I say this because it was our last stop in French Polynesia and we had already done all the water sports we wanted and the grounds and villa were so beautiful that we didn’t really want to leave. I’m not sure whether the villas are all alike, so maybe the cheaper itinerary would not have been as luxurious. It was very nice not to pull out the wallet and just order whatever you want whenever you want it! Another amenity included were the bicycles that came with each villa. It was so much fun to jump on the bikes and go wherever you wanted. The staff were always very professional and helpful. I loved this place and hope we get to go back one day.
