There’s a certain kind of magic in combining wilderness with refined comfort — the energy of the jungle, balanced with the elegance of thoughtful hospitality.
Our two-day stay with Kulu Safaris in Yala National Park, Sri Lanka, was exactly that: a perfect balance of raw nature and refined comfort.
Kulu are known as the pioneers of luxury camping in Yala National Park, and it’s easy to see why. Everything at camp felt effortless – organised grounds, an impressive kitchen and staff who were not only attentive but genuinely delightful. Our luxury tent was spacious and inviting, with a comfortable bed, air-conditioning and screened windows that let in the sounds of the forest while keeping the bugs at bay.
Evenings on the Lake Under the Stars
One of my favourite parts of our stay was the treehouse, built high in a Palu tree overlooking the lake. It felt like something out of a storybook. We watched the sun melt into the horizon with a glass of chilled white wine in hand, and the world seemed to slow down completely.
Dinner that night was pure magic – a barbecue feast on a platform over the water, lit by flickering tiki torches and a canopy of stars and full moon. The spread was generous and delicious: grilled chicken, lamb, sausages, vibrant salads, and a choice of wines from Italy, South Africa, and Australia. We went with the Italian white, which paired perfectly with the warm evening air.
The food throughout our stay was wonderful – full of local flavour and care. The coconut rotis were amazing, and the Sri Lankan breakfast of string hoppers were a treat in themselves.
Into the Wild: The Safaris
We did two safaris – an afternoon safari in Block 5 and a morning one in Block 1. Each had its own mood and magic.
In Block 5, we were lucky to have Ajith, an expert driver and photographer, and Ramani, our guide, who was exceptional. She had such deep knowledge — not just of the animals, but also of the plants, the sounds, and the subtle language of the jungle. Thanks to her, we spotted everything from Indian pitta and bee-eaters to painted storks, purple herons, elephants, crocodiles and the mischievous macaques and langur monkeys swinging above us.
And then came the moment — a leopard sighting that took our breath away! We watched as the large female leopard rested on a shaded boulder before creeping towards a herd of deer. Just as she got close, the jungle erupted with alarm calls – monkeys screeching, birds calling warning – and the deer scattered. The leopard dashed right in front of our jeep. It was thrilling wild theatre!
The next morning’s safari in Block 1 was also full of adventure and animal sightings. The park was bathed in golden light, and we spotted high on a boulder a majestic male leopard, a perfect silhouette backlit with morning sun. It felt almost cinematic.
Quiet Afternoons and Lake Adventures
Back at camp, lunch was a Sri Lankan feast — fragrant chicken curry, crisp hoppers, sweet coconut pancakes, and fresh fruit. Even the camp’s smallest residents, a colony of tiny microbats, added to the sense of being fully immersed in the rhythms of the wild. After a blissful rest in our air-conditioned tent in the heat of the day, we then took out kayaks on the lake. It was serene and cooling, gliding past crocodiles, storks, and Brahminy kites circling overhead.
There’s something magical about seeing the same wilderness from the water — it slows you down and reminds you just how alive and beautiful everything is.
A Sunrise to Remember
On our last morning, three of the lovely Kulu staff guided us up a rocky outcrop in the jungle for sunrise. The view was peaceful and majestic – the national park stretching endlessly below us, the sky turning from rose to gold, the calls of distant peacocks echoing across the jungle.
We ended our stay with breakfast back in the treehouse – still one of my favourite spots in Sri Lanka. String hoppers, Sri Lankan omelette, dhal, coconut roti, homemade marmalade and hot tea — simple, delicious, and made even better by the view over the lake and music of birdsong.
Why Kulu Safaris Stands Out
What I loved most about Kulu is how they manage to make the luxury feel natural. Nothing felt over-the-top, just quietly perfect. The staff’s knowledge, warmth, and attention to detail made the whole experience feel deeply personal.
For anyone who loves wildlife, food, and meaningful travel, and who believes that luxury is about experience rather than excess — Kulu Safaris is the kind of place that stays with you long after you’ve left.
