The lovely Ambalama Villa sits perched on a stretch of golden sand and surrounded by swaying palm trees on the southern coast of Sri Lanka. Boasting a fabulous beachfront location, the decadent estate is also just minutes away from the most iconic landmark in southern Sri Lanka – the majestic Galle Fort. Furnished with comfortable wooden daybeds, rattan armchairs and vintage décor items, the villa offers a fabulous mix of ancient traditions and modern flair.

Welcome to Ambalama Villa

As our car pulled up in the spacious villa’s backyard, we were instantly surrounded by the villa’s gracious staff, offering us refreshing cool towels and delightful welcome drinks. Friendly, professional and helpful, they showed us to our rooms and informed us that lunch was ready and would be served immediately. We were treated to mouth-watering fish balls and fresh salad, which were a true delight after an almost 10-day-long vegan diet.

Amazing Location

Though I was feeling fatigued after a long car ride, I couldn’t help but head out to explore the neighbourhood. Right next door to the villa, I found an Instagram-ready swing which provided a cool setting for sunset shots (for a fee of LKR 500 or about USD 3). Meanwhile, our filmmaker and the remaining team headed to another estate known as the nesting ground for rare birds. The villa itself enjoys a spectacular oceanfront location in the Galle region and it’s only a 15-minute drive from the iconic UNESCO-protected Galle Fort.

Breathtaking Sunsets

Thanks to its epic location on the coastline, Ambalama Villa is one of the best spots for catching mesmerising sunsets, especially when enjoying early dinners in the semi-open living room. Another advantage of staying at the estate is an unmistakable feeling of privacy and tranquillity thanks to the thoughtful positioning of the villa’s four bedrooms. Spread across the expansive property, two of the bedrooms are housed in the left wing while the other pair of rooms sits to the right of the main lounge area.

Delicious Sri Lankan Cuisine

Having already charmed us with its feeling of peace and serenity, Ambalama Villa had one more surprise hidden up its sleeve. Casually dressed for a weeknight dinner, we were greeted by a beautifully dressed table with a dozen of traditional Sri Lankan dishes complemented by authentic sambals and dhals. Those who love spicy dishes and discovering new and exciting flavours will have a ball dining at the villa.

The next day, we woke up to stunning ocean views. I couldn’t help but wish that we could stay at the villa forever – but at the same time I knew that another adventure was already waiting for us. Following the villa’s beautifully tiled pathway, my son and I made yet another stop at the fish pond to watch colourful carps darting between lotus flowers.

Afterwards, we headed to the dining room where an early breakfast was waiting for us. We had a choice of eggs any style, crispy bacon, various jams and fresh fruit as well as tea, coffee and fresh juices, everything served fresh, delicious and cooked to our liking. After finishing breakfast, we waved goodbye to the cheerful staff and headed north to enjoy Flow – the first floating villa in Sri Lanka.
