It’s time for the third and final instalment in our Sri Lanka Diaries. To get you up to speed, have a read through part one and part two before diving into the finale – and what a finale it is! Before waving our goodbyes to the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, we experienced beachfront perfection in two villas and set sail on our very first “floating villa.”

Day 10 – 11: Talalla

Talalla House – Style and Seclusion

Talalla House – my husband’s favourite villa of all times! – basically ticks all the boxes: this villa offers a stunning location, serene surroundings, opulent living spaces and five-star service. Greeted by stunning ocean views and the warm smiles of the friendly staff, we were served a fantastic lunch right on arrival. Afterwards, we had a free afternoon which we spent shooting videos of the villa and wandering around the large estate.

Surrounded by vast lawns, the villa blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings and it’s practically invisible from the beach or the nearby road. One of the most peaceful and secluded villas in Sri Lanka, Talalla House exudes privacy and tranquillity throughout. I loved the villa’s deep pool which allows you to literally dive right in, as well as the shallow section that’s ideal for kids to play around in.

Talalla Beach

At sunset, we loved walking down the beach, frolicking in the ocean and simply marvelling at the picturesque landscape all around us. Strolling down the sand, you’ll eventually need to cross a beautiful river which shreds the shoreline and flows to the ocean. There are a couple of simple venues dotted along the beach serving basic Sri Lankan dishes, fresh juices – and sunset views to die for.

Day 12: Unawatuna

After our relaxing stay at Talalla House, we began our westward journey heading towards the airport as our trip was drawing to a close. Along the way, we were invited to stay at the charming beachfront Ambalama Villa, located in the beach town of Unawatuna. Within minutes from the villa you’ll find grocery stores, shops and restaurants, so the property offers a rather convenient location for families travelling with kids.

Arriving at Ambalama Villa

Upon arrival, we were served a light lunch. After a short nap, my son and I headed to the beach to swim and play. Right next door is a swing popular with Instagrammers chasing the perfect sunset shot – but it gets really crowded in the afternoon.

While me and my son were busy enjoying the villa’s pool (which was coloured by the incredible shades of the setting sun), my husband, Alastair and Sara hopped on a tuk-tuk and went out bird watching. Travelling all the way over from frosty Austria, the birds nestle in warm Sri Lanka for the winter season. Their migration, which takes place at sunset, is an awe-inspiring sight: the sky turns black as countless feathered creatures make their way to their “holiday home” in Sri Lanka.

Day 13: Boldoga Lake

Introducing Flow by the Amber Collection

Our Sri Lankan adventure finished with a true once-in-a-lifetime experience – a floating villa stay onboard the magnificent Flow boat on Bolgoda Lake. Offering generous inclusions, five-star dining and thrilling water sports, the unique Flow houseboats offer an elegant setting for nature lovers and water sports enthusiasts. Flow by the Amber Collection is the first company in Sri Lanka to provide luxurious lake cruises onboard traditional oruwa-style vessels.

Flow Boat | Colombo, Sri Lanka

Arriving at The Marina

Our cruise started from the private Bolgoda Lake Marina. As the Marina’s massive gates opened, the ritzy estate instantly made us feel like VIP guests. A fast boat took us to the larger of two Flow boats, its three bedrooms set up for our group. Right on arrival, we were invited to select a four-course set meal for lunch, with a separate kids menu for our little one.

Dining Onboard

Yummy and sophisticated, each dish offered a fabulous twist on Mediterranean cuisine and traditional Sri Lankan flavours. I opted for the grilled shrimps and fresh salad complete with a mouth-watering dessert, while my son got his favourite – Margherita pizza topped with parmesan cheese. Each plate was a culinary masterpiece and an unexpected explosion of taste and flavours.

Thrilling Water Sports

Besides getting to stay on the lavishly appointed houseboat, guests enjoy access to various water sports and activities. Fishing, jet skiing and animal sightings – these are only a few options from a wide array of thrills offered. Unfortunately, we couldn’t partake in the island picnic they offer, since the tiny islet was already occupied by local children playing there. Instead, we enjoyed a fast boat cruise on the lake to a crocodile spotting site. We spotted wild monkeys, a plethora of birds and amazing flying foxes. Now, you might be wondering “and what about the crocodiles?” I’m happy to report that yes, we did spot a crocodile later that night, during an epic dinner on Flow’s upper-deck.

The Marina Facilities

The Marina where the boats depart from is a cool spot to relax and unwind with friends and family. Featuring a dazzling swimming pool surrounded by sunbeds, couches and bean bags, there is plenty of space for the whole party to have fun, soak up the sun and enjoy a whole array of water activities available at the complex.

The sophisticated restaurant is where the magic really happens, with dishes prepared to be delivered to main boats when guests choose to dine on board. My son and I have spent a couple of hours at The Marina while my husband enjoyed jet skiing and fishing.

As we all know, all good things must come to an end and so it was with our Sri Lankan adventure. Before boarding our flight to Bali that afternoon, we bid a fond farewell to Flow’s friendly staff who already felt like family. It was time to head for new adventures.
