Sand between your toes and a drink in your hand… Yep, you’re definitely on holiday. Though chilled cocktails and ice cold Bintangs are dime a dozen in Bali, when it comes to picking up a nice bottle of wine, you might need to do a little digging. Luckily, we’ve done the hard work for you. Here’s everything you need to know about the best bottle shops and buying alcohol in Bali.

Price of Alcohol in Bali

First things first: other than your basic Bintang beer (which you can pick up at around IDR 15,000 or USD $1 per bottle), alcohol is relatively expensive in Bali. Most travellers are shocked the first time they try to pick up a bottle of wine as the price is significantly higher than you’d expect in a destination that’s so affordable on other fronts.

In Indonesia, import duties on alcohol are set at a staggering 150% of the product’s market price for beverages with an alcohol content of less than 80 percent (including brandy, whisky, vodka, gin and rum), while wine is taxed at 90% of the market price. So while there might be some variation on prices depending on where you buy that bottle of red, the prices are unlikely to vary all that much due to the high tax.

Roughly speaking, a bottle of local brand wine (Hatten, Plaga etc.) will cost around IDR 200,000 (USD $15), while imported wines are usually priced at around IDR 350,000 (USD $26) and up. Imported spirits like Bacardi, Absolut Vodka, Jose Cuervo and Jack Daniels are usually priced from around IDR 650,000 (USD $48) and up.

Bring Your Own Bottle?

Since wine and alcohol in general are relatively expensive in Bali, many travellers opt to bring along their own bottle when travelling to Bali. According to the Indonesian customs regulations, you can legally bring along one litre of alcohol per passenger, duty free. Couples planning to tie the knot in Bali often request guests to each bring along one bottle of wine to cut back on the overall costs.

If, however, you don’t want to bring your own bottle or simply want to do some shopping locally, there are more than a few options for picking up a great bottle in Bali.

If you see a bottle you like, grab it fast, as it might very well be the last one of its kind you’ll see for a while.
