Wadano has emerged as the premium district in Hakuba. Located just moments from the Happo One ski slopes, the area is dotted with chalets that have the “it” factor. Even the snow here feels particularly fluffy! Gakuto Villas is a fantastic place to take it all in.
Making Ourselves at Home
Gakuto Villas is a collection of 12 villas. The villas are all identical – or as we discovered during our stay, they are all equally great. It’s just what you want on a ski holiday: a functional chalet where everyone can get cosy before and after hitting the slopes.
There’s something about these chalets that makes you feel right at home. We loved cooking dinner in the upstairs kitchen and the forest views through the full wall windows were magical.
2 Equal Bedrooms
Our villa had one bedroom on each floor, so we could all enjoy a little downtime when we needed it. The bedrooms are quite similar, and they both have ensuite bathrooms, so we never felt like we were staying on top of each other and the house never felt crowded. Overall, it made for a very comfortable stay.
A Great Hakuba Address
While it’s not a ski-in ski-out property, Gakuto Villas’ location is pretty hard to beat. First off, the setting is simply gorgeous. Wadano is a wooded area and the whole neighbourhood looks pretty as a picture with the pine trees covered in snow.
And it’s not just about the appearance – the chalets offer ease of access too. We stumbled upon a handful of restaurants and bars just walking around the neighbourhood, and Rhythm Japan (a top-rated ski rental store) was practically around the corner.
Most importantly, Gakuto Villas is located just a few minutes from the lifts at Happo One so you can really maximise your time spent on the slopes. What’s even better, the estate offers a complimentary shuttle service during the busy months of the ski year so getting around is really easy.

Gakuto Villas are very easy to love. These chalets hit all the right notes and make it look so easy – and at a terrific price point, might we add. The location is great and the chalets just pack in all the essentials needed for a carefree ski stay. Best of all, they have that cosy and comfortable air that makes you feel right at home.
