During Ministry of Villas’ annual excursions to Niseko, our team has stayed in some of the most jaw-dropping chalets. After sampling the best of the best, it’s rare that a chalet completely knocks our socks off. During our last stay in the powder capital of the world, Hideaway on Escarpment achieved the near-impossible. Ladies and gentlemen, get ready to experience a winter retreat that really is the next level.

Origami Style

The best way to describe Hideaway on Escarpment is to imagine an origami penthouse which reveals new dimensions as it unfolds with perfect purposeful grace. This single-storey chalet features architecture and design that’s been fine-tuned to perfection. Upon arrival, there’s a sleek touchpad for keyless access – just the first taste of the property’s effortless design.

Hideaway on Escarpment welcomes us in to a spacious living and dining room and really, this is love at first sight. Lined with full-wall windows and decorated with muted Japanese style, the living areas feel perfectly at home amidst the snowy woods. And then there are the hidden surprises waiting to be revealed.

Hideaway on Escarpment has two full bedrooms and a third bedroom can be created by sliding a door to close off part of the living room. One of the most delightful features has got to be the foldout gym which is hidden behind folding doors in the living room.

But it’s not just about the cool design: Hideaway on Escarpment is also ready to tackle real life. The sleek designer kitchen is fitted with Miele appliances and for convenience, there’s also a washer and dryer which is always a heaven-sent when you’re staying longer than a few days.

Wow Factor

The undeniable statement piece of Hideaway on Escarpment is the onsen style bath which is incorporated as a part of the living room. It feels incredibly decadent to have the onsen placed so prominently instead of it being hidden off on a basement level as so many chalets seem to do.

Niseko Hideaway Escarpment Onsen

Hideaway on Escarpment’s onsen is placed beside a full-wall window which can be opened or closed depending on your mood. For onsen aficionados, it needs to be stated that this tub is fed by chlorinated water and not natural hot spring water. But the relaxing ambiance sure feels real.

Hideaway on Escarpment has all the bells and whistles you could want, ranging from the private onsen to Apple TV and Mount Yotei views. But just like the mountainside views that surround, everything is done with effortless grace and ease – absolutely nothing about this chalet is loud or garish.

At Home on Millionaire’s Mile

Hideaway on Escarpment takes its name from the chalet’s location on the sloping hillside on the outer edge of Hirafu Village. This area could easily be called the Millionaire’s Mile of Niseko, as it is home to the most luxurious chalets in the area. A case in point is the beautiful Kitadori and majestic Kawasemi Residence, aka Hideaway’s next door neighbours.

The Escarpment Estate is a very special part of Hirafu. You’re still a part of the village, but you’re also in your own private pocket. The Escarpment chalets are built as ambitious passion projects and see families returning year after year – and not just during winter. That kind of energy is palpable. As the Escarpment Estate sits perched on the outer edge of the village, the mountainside views you get from these exclusive chalets can never be blocked. They’re as eternal as the mountains themselves.

Final Verdict

Hideaway on Escarpment is one of the most spectacular properties our team has ever stayed in. We were completely wowed by the innovative design and absolutely fell in love with the chalet’s private onsen. Staying at the exclusive Escarpment Estate was a very special experience as well – one that we can’t wait to recreate before too long.
