Let the tropics come to you. Get inspired by lush tropical details, beautifully chosen furniture and laid-back bohemian themes from some of our favourite villas in Bali.

A Tropical State of Mind

First, let’s set the scene. We’re talking about those dreamy tropical abodes where you unequivocally feel you’re in Bali: thatched roofs, bamboo architecture, vibrant textiles, lush tropical greenery, maybe a stick of incense burning in the background and the soft sounds of the rindik floating in the breeze…

Can you feel wanderlust taking over?

Living

Balinese villas were made for entertaining and spending quality time with the family, so many of them come with fabulous living rooms and lounge areas.

While indoor/outdoor living tends to be the norm on the island and many visitors embrace the outdoor living areas, many villas actually allow the living areas to fully enclosed to allow guests to cool off with the AC and to keep the mozzies at bay. This can also makes the living room setup easier to replicate at home. Wicker or wooden furniture, exotic textiles and carpets along with vibrant green plants are some of our favourite ways to bring a little piece of Bali home.

Dining

It’s a commonly known fact that everything tastes better outside and with Bali’s blissful year-round climate, it’s little wonder that most villas feature an outdoor dining area.

But whether you’re redoing your patio, revamping the dining room or even reorganising a small studio apartment, you can introduce a touch of that relaxed island lifestyle with a artfully crafted dining table, a set of beautifully bohemian dining chairs or even a well-chosen place setting. Selamat makan!

Bedrooms

Nothing says tropical dreaming quite like a billowy canopy bed draped in crisp white linen, framed with touches of bamboo and windows looking out to the lush outdoors. Accessible ways to achieve this look at home include updating your linen and other textiles, adding some greenery to your decor or even just introducing some Bali themed knick knacks to the room – we love anything done in wicker along with artful wood carvings.

Bathroom

No one does decadent outdoor bathrooms quite like Bali. And while they are dreamy, opting for an actual open-air bathroom back home might not be the most practical idea. You can still draw some inspiration from these dreamy setups to create your own private spa sanctuary at home. The colourscheme tends to be either earthy and natural or pristinely white. Touches of green are practically a must, but if you’re worried about sustaining a houseplant, you could opt for a low maintenance cactus like the one in Villa Massilia. Just add some Balinese spa music and you’re golden.

Psst…! Many of the high end villas in Bali use toiletries from Sensatia Botanicals who offer international shipping. You can shop their pure, natural products here: sensatia.com

Textiles

Sourcing some beautiful textiles is one of the easiest – and cost efficient – ways to introduce a touch of Bali to your home. Depending on your taste, you could opt for authentic Indonesian batik or ikat textiles, or be more on the tropical nose with tropical prints of palm trees, seashells and more.

Lamps

Though you can’t order that Bali sunshine to be delivered home, you can achieve some of that relaxed island vibe with lamps. We love statement shell chandeliers, though the bohemian feel you get with wicker lamps is also pretty hard to resist. (Fun fact – did you know some of the trendiest wicker lamps are actually modelled after traditional Balinese rooster baskets?) A row of matching wicker lanterns hung above the breakfast bar has been an enduring trend in Bali and one we’ve also seen at some of our favourite restaurants and cafes on the island.
