At Ministry of Villas, we believe the best way to understand a villa is to stay in it. Our latest visit took us back to one of Koh Samui’s most prestigious estates – Samujana – a collection of architecturally stunning villas perched on a private hillside overlooking the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Thailand. This time, we had the pleasure of staying in Villa 28, and it has quickly become a new team favourite.

Getting to Koh Samui

Koh Samui is one of Thailand’s most accessible island destinations. With direct flights from Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Hong Kong, getting here is straightforward. The island’s boutique-style airport offers a relaxed arrival experience, with open-air terminals and friendly service.

From the airport, it’s just a short 15-minute drive to Samujana Estate, tucked into the Choeng Mon hillside on the island’s northeast coast. Despite its secluded setting, the estate is close to the action – just minutes from beautiful beaches, local markets, and the nightlife of Chaweng.

Welcome to Samujana

Samujana isn’t your typical villa resort. It’s an exclusive estate of individually designed, privately owned villas, with each one offering a unique take on luxury island living. Designed by Gary Fell of GFab Architects, these villas are renowned for their bold architecture, open-plan layouts, and panoramic views over the sea.

What sets Samujana apart is its combination of privacy and resort-level service. Each villa comes with a dedicated team – including a villa manager, housekeeping, and chef – ensuring your stay feels both indulgent and effortless.

First Impressions of Villa 28

From the moment we stepped into Villa 28, it was clear this was something special. The design is a true celebration of tropical modernism – clean lines, cascading terraces, and those endless ocean views. Having stayed in Villa 30 years ago (which we thought couldn’t be beaten), Villa 28 has now taken the top spot in our hearts.

The entry is dramatic, and the reveal of the living and dining pavilion is a real “wow” moment. It’s a fantastic showcase of Gary Fell’s work and captures the spirit of indoor-outdoor island living.

Perfect for Groups

Villa 28 is ideal for families and groups travelling together. The layout ensures everyone has their own space, with generously sized bedrooms spread across different levels. Whether you’re reading by the pool, enjoying a cocktail on the terrace, or gathering for a shared meal, the villa flows effortlessly to suit your mood.

The air-conditioned living room and TV lounge were especially appreciated by the team – a cool retreat during the heat of the day and a great place to come together in the evenings, particularly when tropical rain makes an appearance.

Outstanding Service

Service at Samujana continues to impress. Unlike some villas globally that are shifting to a more stripped-back, Airbnb-style model, Samujana keeps the focus firmly on full-service luxury. It’s this attention to detail – the thoughtful turndowns, personalised meals, and always-available staff – that creates such a memorable stay.

A highlight for us was the in-villa dining system, allowing guests to browse menus and order with ease through the in-room devices. Simple, intuitive, and a seamless part of the experience.

And we must give a special mention to Winer, our villa manager, whose attentiveness and warmth elevated every moment of our stay. He’s a true asset to the estate.

Dining in the Villa

Meals at Villa 28 were another highlight. The team was able to cater to different preferences within our group, with a mix of Thai dishes and international fare. The coffee and tea station in the kitchen was a great addition, especially for those of us who like an early morning cup before the day gets started.

Dining settings in the villa are beautiful – from alfresco poolside lunches to more formal indoor dinners – every meal feels special and relaxed. Small touches like lighting, table settings, and flexible meal times added to the comfort.

Rest and Recharge

Our bedroom was a sanctuary – spacious, stylish, and incredibly comfortable. The bathrooms were equally luxurious, with rainfall showers and modern amenities. These little moments of indulgence – fluffy towels, perfect shower pressure, serene views – all contribute to what makes Samujana stand out from the crowd.

Unique Experiences

During our stay, the team arranged a rooftop sound bath – a thoughtful and immersive wellness session that let us wind down and connect in a new way. With the sun setting and the sea in view, it was a unique touch we’ll remember.

Explore Koh Samui: Chaweng & Fisherman’s Village

While Samujana offers such an all-encompassing villa experience that it’s tempting never to leave, Koh Samui has plenty to explore just a short drive away.

For guests who enjoy shopping, dining, and vibrant nightlife, Chaweng is just 10–15 minutes from the villa. It’s one of the island’s most popular hubs, offering everything from beach clubs and spas to night markets and boutique shopping. It’s also home to a wide range of dining options – from casual Thai street food to elegant rooftop restaurants.

For something a little more laid-back, Fisherman’s Village in Bophut is a charming alternative. With its historic beachfront promenade, weekly walking street market, and rows of chic cafes, bars, and boutiques, it’s a favourite for both locals and visitors. Dining here at sunset with the sea breeze is a must-do – and it’s only about 20 minutes from Samujana.

Whether you’re in the mood for a lively night out or a relaxed evening stroll, these nearby neighbourhoods offer the perfect contrast to the tranquillity of the villa.
