Our trip to Sri Lanka earlier this year started in Colombo, from where we traced the coastline south. Comprising a large group of travellers from Bali and India, we enjoyed the grandeur of some of Sri Lanka’s largest villas the first week. After bidding farewell to our colleagues, we (Sara and Alastair) sought a more intimate retreat.

South Point Villa captivated us immediately. The 3-bedroom villa sits on a small bluff that extends into the ocean, providing 270 degree water views from the balcony and front lawn. Our stay was magical!

Absolute Beachfront

The villa provides exclusive access to a stunning sandy beach, where serenity reigns and you’ll likely find yourself with the tranquil expanse all to yourself, save for a few local fishermen. If you are lucky, you will see the villa owner’s beautiful horses being taken for a walk along the beach right in front of the villa.

We decided to take a dip in the ocean on the second day, but the high tide made it a bit challenging due to a strong current, so we redirected our aquatic plans to the villa’s pool instead. The pool was a smarter alternative to the wild ocean and equally picturesque. With the waves crashing in the distance, it provided us with the best of both worlds!

Colonial Design

We absolutely love Sri Lankan colonial furniture as it reflects the blend of cultural influences that have shaped the island’s history. During the colonial period, Sri Lanka was under the rule of various European powers, including the Portuguese, Dutch, and British. This diverse colonial heritage is fused with local materials and artisanal techniques to create durable furniture suitable for the tropical environment.

Intricate carvings and elegant details characterise the furniture within South Point Villa. The furniture of this period not only reminds you of the historical interplay of cultures, it’s also super comfortable and relaxing!

Dinner on the Beach

The villa boasts a dedicated and skilled chef, ensuring that there’s little need to venture far for a delightful culinary experience. However, should the desire for a change of scenery or a taste of local flavours arise, a short drive will lead you to a selection of excellent restaurants.

Although nearby dining options are tempting, we promise that the best experience is dining on the front lawn of South Point Villa, overlooking the ocean. Our chef offered to prepare anything we wanted – we had a delicious pasta marinara on our first night and a traditional Sri Lankan meal on our second night (pictured below).
