There is something special about Sumberkima Hill. The magic starts as you follow the signs from the main road up through a local village, winding up a small hill. It’s not just any hill, this is Sumberkima Hill!
The Dutch resort owners bought the land some years ago and started building their vision of a villa that would incorporate a modern design philosophy whilst being careful not to disturb the local village. The result was magnificent and guests who stayed with them asked if they could also have one built… a community was born!
We stayed in a 2-bedroom villa with views of four volcanos on Java in the distance. It made the perfect backdrop at sunset. The design is simple, yet comfortable and stylish. We felt like we were staying in a 5-star resort with room service and buggy on hand. But when we looked at the food menu and activity guide, we realised the prices are not what we would normally pay for all this.
The location is spectacular and the vibe, well it’s hard to describe. Instagram chic meets resort meets local village environment. Sumberkima’s return guest rate is super high and I now know why. Although it’s a 4-hour drive from Bali’s airport, it’s worth the trip and we’ll definitely be coming back.
Amazing Value
The villa resort has several restaurants that you can either dine in at or request room service to eat back at your villa. The food is amazing but also incredibly cheap! I had a $7 pasta and it tasted like it was transported directly from Italy. My husband had the pandan dessert for $3.50 and raved about it for hours. I don’t think you can find this kind of value in any of the tourist hot spots.
What I loved most about Sumberkima Hill is the service we received: we were driven around the resort in a buggy by super-friendly staff – it’s clear the locals from the surrounding village love working at Sumberkima Hill and meeting travellers from all over the world. This translates into big smiles and the warmest of warm Balinese hospitality.
The buggy can also take you down to the beach, so you have access to some of the best snorkelling in Indonesia right at your doorstep.
Back to the Design
The open-air living room in our villa is a treat, it has roller bamboo doors that can be closed to create the room or left open to let the breeze in.
The two bedrooms are the same size both with ensuite bathrooms and there is a one which has a little bunk bed for kids in one room and the other has the bathtub. Upstairs is the roof top bale with real lawn and plant which I love and a special feature.
No one villa is the same; each has a design incorporating the surrounding area and views yet they also incorporate the style and taste of the individual owner. We inspected many of the villas during our stay and I don’t think you can go wrong in any of them. The villas range from one-bedroom up to four bedrooms, so it really comes down to the size of the group. You can trust the owner architect he has come up with a unique design for the land.
Yoga Retreats Welcome
There is a huge yoga sala with mats so if you wish to host a yoga or health retreat and require guests have their own private villas then this is the ideal resort. Again at a very good price.
The Vibe
I mentioned the vibe and there is something special about staying here. If you are like me and want to relax yet still stay on top of work, then you’ll be happy to learn I was able to work online with very fast WiFi, then switch off to enjoy the natural surroundings.
