Bali is synonymous with ice-cold Bintang’s on the beach watching the sunset on another tropical day in paradise. But, not anymore do you have to moan after day two, that all you would like is a decently brewed tap beer. Black Sand Brewery is Canggu’s newest addition to the social scene – suitable for friends, children and groups of all ages. Self-described as “… more than just beer, it’s a way of life. It is a community of like-minded beer enthusiasts, foodies and lovers of life…”, it’s easy to spot that Black Sand Brewery has well and truly made their mark in Bali and are here to stay.

What’s on Tap this Month?

It is our understanding that they aren’t going to be sticking to the same set of brews, (which we are stoked about) as it means that we get to switch it up and try something new each month. Currently, they are brewing four very popular beers, some of which were sold out in the first week. If that doesn’t scream MUST TRY we don’t know what does. We tried our hand at the Kolsch; which was a light and easy to drink beer with a crispy finish. Friend’s who prefer a fruitier option tried the India Pale Ale, and for non-beer drinkers, were hooked on this.

Check out Black Sand’s brews for the month of August:

  • India Pale Ale – characterized by floral, fruity, citrus-like American hops, our IPA is all about hop flavour, aroma and bitterness. for the real beer drinkers.
  • Kolsch – a unique german style brew that is fermented with ale yeast and then finished by lagering. the result is the best of both worlds, a light, easy drinking ale that finishes crisp and clean.
  • Blonde Ale – an easy-drinking style with a touch of bitterness, although not particularly dominating, rounded and smooth, this one is a classic.
  • Belgian Pale Ale – pitcher perfect Belgian-style pale ale with a toasted malt flavor. Less grainy, less sweet, and a touch more bitter.

Available in both pints and half-pints, at a reasonable IDR 40,000 – 70,000 per beer.

Finding Black Sand Brewery

Located on Jalan Batu Bolong, undeniably Canggu’s most famous strip of boutique shopping, and restaurants of various international cuisines – all of which lead down to the surfing playground of Batu Bolong Beach.

What’s on the Menu?

Flavoursome food is an understatement when dining at Black Sand Brewery. We went with a small group of friends and decided to dine family-style as recommended by the staff – they were right. We tried a bit of everything from the menu and can’t go past recommending the following: cheese board, any and all of the pizzas, BBQ wings (10/10 would go back solely for these). On our next visit, we can’t wait to try their mains menu which is packed full of seafood, beef and poultry options.

Prices: ranging from highly affordable to moderately priced, there really is something for everyone. Most shared style items start from IDR 50,000 and proceed upwards from there.
