From world-class skiing to fabulous winter sports, there’s no doubt that Niseko offers thrills that’ll send your heart racing. But when you look beyond those adrenaline inducing activities, there’s a cosiness to this powder paradise as well. We discovered absolute wintertime bliss during our relaxing stay at Starchase.

Annupuri Ambiance

Starchase is located in Annupuri, one of the four ski resorts that make up Niseko United. In fact, Annupuri is something of a hidden gem as it is more quiet than the other three and offers easy access to powder and less crowded runs.

Starchase matches the resort’s laid-back air perfectly – this chalet has a very relaxing and calming feel to it. We loved how spacious, comfortable and homely this four-bedroom property felt.

Fun and Games

Starchase is spread over two floors with much of the ground floor dedicated to having a good time. We had a blast in the large recreation room where we could all hang out as a group but still do our own thing. Some of us watched a movie while others were playing a game of pool – one of us even snuck in a quick workout on the treadmill.

The ski room by the entrance also deserves a special mention. The room is spacious and very well organised so there’s enough room for everyone to store their gear, even if you’re travelling with a large group.

Dinner with a View

Heading upstairs, the chalet’s living areas are impressively large in size and crowned with a vaulted ceiling. The dining area is particularly well placed. Dining by those large windows as the snow fell outside felt quite magical.

Powder Dreams

Starchase has four bedrooms: two on the ground floor and two upstairs. The design is streamlined and calm and the rooms felt very comfortable and functional. A case in point: each room has its own climate control. The four bathrooms (two of them ensuite) were really well equipped as well.

One of the bedrooms is a traditional tatami room where futon mattresses are laid out on straw mat flooring. It’s a great way to add some local colour into your stay.

Niseko Meets the Rockies

With its pitched roof and sturdy timber design, Starchase almost feels like a North American cabin that’s been transplanted into Japan. This fusion of Niseko and the Canadian Rockies felt very unique and special.

Another feature that makes the chalet feel irresistibly North American is the amazing stone fireplace. It sits at the centre of the upper floor, with the living room, kitchen and dining area all wrapping around it. The fireplace dominates the room and gives the space so much warmth and character.

And that really sums it up: Starchase just has a fabulous personality to it.
