A Beach-by-Beach Guide to Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is famed for its picture-perfect beaches – but not every beach is the same! Here, we’ll take you on a tour of the island’s coastline. We have made this journey several times and hope that our experience will help you pick the beach that most speaks to you.

Orientation

Bandaranaike International Airport, your entry point to Sri Lanka, is located just north of Colombo on the west coast. The best beaches are located further down south. Luckily, distance is not an enemy here thanks to the expressway that scoots around Colombo and then heads straight down south. This road connects you to all the beaches discussed below.

The road is relatively new (parts of it were completed in 2020) so it’s in great condition. Travelling down the expressway is smooth and efficient which means you don’t have to stress over distances. Instead, you can simply pick the most appealing beach as your home base and then explore up and down the coastline with ease.

Wadduwa & Maggona

Wadduna and Maggona are among the first beaches you encounter as you travel south from Colombo. Being relatively close to the capital (just over an hour’s drive or so), this is where city dwellers head when they need to decompress. Wadduwa and Maggona both offer wide stretches of sand and a quiet setting away from the crowds. It’s that dreamy “a beach to yourself” sort of situation. These are also the first beaches along the coast where you’ll find some truly spectacular villas.

Bentota

Bentota is the first village along the coastline that has a real buzz about it. Bentota has a beautiful, wide sandy beach, but the thing that really makes the village stand out is its namesake river. There are so many activities available here, from river tours to wildlife excursions and beyond. The town itself is quite vibrant too with plenty of restaurants tucked throughout. Local landmarks include the Geoffrey Bawa designed Lunuganga estate and the sacred Galapatha Royal Temple. When it comes to accommodation, Bentota offers options ranging from fabulous riverside villas to beautiful beachfront properties.

Ambalangoda & Hikkaduwa

Heading south from Bentota, you’ll find two beautiful and relatively quiet beaches within easy reach of each other. Of the two, Hikkaduwa is definitely the livelier option as its one of the top surf beaches in Sri Lanka. Ambalangoda, on the other hand, offers a more serene, away-from-it-all setting. One of the main advantages of staying in this area is its proximity to Galle Fort. This UNESCO-protected bastion dates back to the 16th century and is an undeniable highlight of the southeast coastline. With its cobblestone streets, quaint shops and charming restaurants, Galle makes for a fabulous daytrip. If you’re keen to make Ambalangoda or Hikkaduwa your homebase in Sri Lanka, both of them offer amazing villas set right on the water.

One of the best-known spots on the west coast, offering consistent reef breaks. It’s great for all levels, with sections for both beginners and more advanced surfers.

Unawatuna

Located about six kilometres down the coast from Galle, Unawatuna is arguably the most famous beach in Sri Lanka. This reputation is well deserved as this is a gorgeous, palm fringed bay with golden sand and inviting blue waters. While the area is nowhere near as crowded as the packed beaches of, say, Thailand or Bali, Unawatuna definitely has a buzz about it. The area is really starting to take off and blossom into a vibrant hub for the young, hip and cool. It’s hardly surprising then that the area has also sprouted some truly impressive villas.

Talpe

Talpe is located just a short drive down the coast from Unawatuna and the area between the two beaches is a very fun zone to be in. This stretch is dotted with beach clubs and restaurants galore – there’s even a turtle hatchery along the way. Overall, there’s just a lot going on here. Talpe itself is very interesting as this stretch of beach has attracted a lot of serious investment. The most exclusive and luxurious villas in the wider Galle region are located in Talpe – the area has essentially evolved into Millionaire’s Mile.

Heading further along the coast, the area between Talpe and Weligama is very quiet. Staying in this area means you’ll need a vehicle to get around as nothing is really walking distance, save for the odd local restaurant.

Weligama & Mirissa

Weligama and Mirissa are the next notable beaches, both offering beautiful views and stunning sunsets over the ocean bay. Boasting the best range of waves in the country, the bay is also the most popular surf district in Sri Lanka. The area has a very young, hip and vibrant energy with restaurants and cafes clustered around the main road. As you venture beyond that main drag, you can discover some hidden gems tucked amongst the little lanes.

Talalla

Travelling further past buzzy Mirissa, the coast begins to quiet down. The places you’ll encounter are the likes of Talalla House, a hidden treasure of a villa built right on Talalla Beach. This is simply one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and remarkably, you might just have it all to yourself. It’s the perfect place for an away-from-it-all getaway.

Hiriketiya

Heading further east from Talalla, you’ll move through coastal farms and villages. It might look like not much is going on… and them bam! You land at a picture-perfect beach where the line-up is stacked, and the scene is very hip and happening. Hiriketiya is one of the last little pockets of excitement on the southern coastline before things get really quiet.

An increasingly popular surf destination known for its stunning horseshoe-shaped bay and consistent waves. It offers a relaxed vibe and a mix of breaks:

  • Left-hand point break – Ideal for intermediate and advanced surfers, this break offers smooth, peeling waves that provide long rides when conditions are right.
  • Beach break – Located closer to the shore, this spot is perfect for beginners with smaller, gentler waves ideal for learning to surf.

Tangalle & Beyond

Travelling further past Hiriketiya, things quiet down in a big way. Nilwella and Kudawella still attract some people, but as you reach Tangalle, things get very serene indeed. Staying in this area allows you to just forget about the world, and you might not see anyone for miles. That peace and privacy is the reward you get for travelling the furthest away from the capital. A bit after Tangalle, the road starts to curve inland where you’ll discover Yala National Park and all the adventures waiting in Sri Lanka’s lush interior.
