Exciting news is on the horizon for Kuta, Lombok. Following the announcement of the MotoGP 2021 coming to Lombok by ITDC president director Abdulbar M. Mansoer;

“We signed a contract in Madrid on Jan. 29 with Dorna, the MotoGP operator, and Mandalika’s street circuit is targeted to have its first race in 2021. Now, we will focus on establishing the venue, infrastructure and facilities.”

This comes more than two decades since Indonesia last hosted two consecutive stints in West Java in 1996 and 1997.

Hit by earthquakes in 2018, Kuta Lombok, the site will be built in the Mandalika Special Economic Zone with a focus on establishing the venue, infrastructure and facilities. Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) signed the deals with Dorna in 2019 and is now moving to construct the 4.32 kilometre race with a target of completion 2021 for its first race.

This exciting development is said to bring supporting facilities such as a hospital, residential buildings, villas and hotels (Pullman, Novotel and Royal Tulip are already well underway) and a shopping centre with over 131 hectares already cleared to make way. If successful this internationally recognised sporting event will bring over 150,000 spectators and thus an abundance of tourism revenue to the booming economy of Lombok.

Our team recently visited Kuta Lombok and can confirm that as of December 2019 the development is well and truly underway. With the influx of tourism from Air Asia’s direct flights from Perth and increasing interest to discover more of what Indonesia has to offer – Kuta Lombok and its surrounding islands are feeling the transformation similar to what Canggu experience 5, 6, 7+ years ago.
