Beach aficionados, nature lovers and sports enthusiasts – the team here at Ministry of Villas is a real melting pot of personalities so when it comes to travelling, it’s hard to find a destination that caters to everyone’s tastes and preferences. During our latest excursion we discovered an island nation that offers something for everyone – oh Sri Lanka, how we love you! Our trip was filled with thrilling excursions, new experiences and unexpected discoveries. The two weeks’ voyage left us with memories that will last a lifetime. Here are the highlights of our Sri Lankan adventure – don’t forget to check out parts two and three!

Day 1 – 2: Arriving in Sri Lanka

Upon landing at the airport in Colombo, we were met by our smiling driver, Milhroy, who escorted us to the hotel where we met up with team members who had arrived earlier. After that, we headed to our first destination – Saffron & Blue villa located in serene Kosgoda village on the west coast. Since we were pretty tired after our long-haul flight over from Europe, me and my two-year-old son fell asleep in the air-conditioned comfort of the car.

Lunch at Sangria Sun

We had arranged a few villa inspections along the way from Colombo to the villa and were amazed by the beauty, tranquillity and unique charm that each property exuded. One of the villas – the enticingly named Sangria Sun – had prepared us a scrumptious lunch complete with authentic Sri Lankan dishes, including traditional sambals, dhals and chutneys. Savouring the meal, I realised how much I had missed the island; its exotic flavours and surprising mix of tastes and textures. It was nightfall by the time we reached Saffron & Blue, but we could still get a sense of the villa’s beautiful setting and blissfully peaceful ambiance.

Visiting the Turtle Hatchery

Our time at Saffron & Blue felt relaxed and serene, with days spent enjoying the pool, exploring the beach (which is revealed during low tide) and taking in the surrounding natural attractions. My son and I visited the nearby turtle hatchery while the rest of the group opted for a boat ride along the mangrove forest and up to the cinnamon plantation waiting beyond. The villa manager was more than happy to help us arrange day trips and as an added convenience, the boat service was located just minutes from the villa.

Day 3: Bentota

Heading up the coast to Bentota, we were expecting congested traffic which based on our previous visits is quite typical for Sri Lanka. We were, however, surprised to discover that the situation on the roads had vastly improved since our last visit! Of course, the traffic is still somewhat chaotic but drivers seemed to be more careful this time around. The only real hazard seemed to be the busses which zip in between cars and tuk-tuks to keep up with their schedule.

Toll Roads and Sri Lankan Highways

It took us around two hours to reach our next destination, Villa Republic Bentota, taking the new toll road. This new highway has been operating since November 2019 and has made reaching the popular southwestern destinations from Colombo that much easier. Add to this the trains operating throughout the island and getting around Sri Lanka is no longer an issue.

The car ride along the new road was smooth and relaxing, offering the perfect opportunity for a catnap or simply for gazing at the beautiful views pierced by the smooth asphalt highway.

Checking in at Villa Republic Bentota

Upon arriving in Bentota, looking over the bridge which crosses Bentota Ganga, we saw several private jetties flanking traditional Sri Lankan houses. One of these was our destination – Villa Republic Bentota.

Blending in with the surrounding nature, the villa consists of several standalone pavilions built around an open-plan lounge area which opens to the villa’s pool. Despite the rainy weather, we could still appreciate the scenic setting and unique design of the property. We took a walk along the pool to see the private pier with a speed boat moored to the jetty. Featuring sun beds, couches and chairs, the deck was my go-to area when I needed a little quiet time by myself.

A Very Special Team Dinner

So what made our stay at Villa Republic Bentota so special? Welcoming our team members from India! After all, it’s always the people that make a trip special. Arriving in the late afternoon, our Indian colleagues joined us for six days filled with exciting excursions, fabulous dining and of course, unforgettable villa stays. All dressed up, we headed from the lounge to the dining area where our feast was served. We were blown away by the variety and delicious flavours of the local food, with the staff always close by to serve the food.

After a mouth-watering feast of grilled chicken, sautéed vegetables, curries and dhals, we were served a divine chocolate cake for dessert. It’s safe to say that the team at Villa Republic Bentota won me over with their fabulous food! Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time to enjoy all the water sports available at the villa, but luckily we could try them out later at Boldoga Lake near the end of our trip.
