Every year in March I visit Niseko and stay in Hirafu. I keep coming back as Niseko has an incredible atmosphere and relaxed vibe. Now, 7 years on since I first arrived the rest of the world is falling in love with Niseko too!

So why do I love Niseko and recommend Hirafu as a base when planning a ski trip?

Niseko Izakayas

I love Japanese food! Either stocking up on food from Lucky Supermarket or eating out at one of the cool Izakaya in town. No matter where you go the food is fresh and amazing.

Safety

There are not many places in the world where you can leave the front door unlocked. Japan is super safe which translates into an amazing feeling when here. Whether you are travelling with a group of friends, solo or with family Japan truly is a very special place.

Onsens

Public onsens are great, however, I prefer a private onsen. Chalet Ivy has a great onsen available for up to 6 guests and is Y5,000 for a 30-minute session. And really 30 minutes is all you need.

Chalets in Niseko

The architecture in Hirafu is cool! There are really interesting designs here in Niseko. From the Konkuriito style block to log style chalets. Prices are reasonable if you are staying a week in winter with a group of friends. March is a great time to visit as the snow is still falling however it’s come close to the end of the season and outside of the school holiday so prices on accommodation are reduced.

Fashion

I love rugging up. When I’m in Singapore and Australia it’s never cold enough to wear my big winter coats. Niseko still has a long way to go when it comes to shopping, however, you can buy essentials and even branded ski gear such as Moncler and Bogner. I suggest bringing your favourites and browse through the shops for accessories and gifts.

Skiing

I admit I’m not much of a skier. I started learning in my 30’s and feel I have more fear now about falling over and breaking something compared to others who grew up skiing. But I still get out there a couple of times and really find it easy skiing in Niseko.
