Japan’s buzziest ski resorts draw in visitors with promises of a real-life winter wonderland.

The snow here is so beautiful and plentiful that it’s guaranteed to wow you, whether you prefer to scale those famous slopes or cosy up by the fireside, nursing a hot chocolate (or maybe a glass of sake).

Niseko, Furano, and Hakuba bring together two of the hottest travel trends: ever-alluring Japan and winter travel that actually feels like, well, winter.

While many visitors settle for whichever lodge is closest to the ski lifts and apres-ski scene, those in the know set their sights further afield. After inspecting and staying in hundreds of chalets, we have discovered some real hidden gems. These wow properties immerse you in Japan’s stunning nature.

Your Own Winter Wonderland

When you leave behind the busy resorts, you will be greeted by endless stretches of pure white snow – as opposed to the slushy greys or (yikes!) yellows you might find in more crowded areas.

In these serene locales, peace and privacy reign supreme. The chalets are surrounded by wide open spaces and magnificent views. If you’re lucky, you might just spot a red fox through your full wall window. Because there are no nearby neighbours to block you in, the chalets themselves tend to be lavishly large as well. The whole setup is incredibly relaxing – what could be better than curling up on the sofa, listening to the soft crackle of the fireplace as the snow falls outside?

As for the cherry on top? Because these properties are hidden off the beaten path, they tend to come at a terrific price point.

Getting Around (Driving is a Must!)

These hidden gem chalets are located outside the buzziest, busiest resort areas. While Niseko has a robust shuttle bus system, their routes don’t reach the more remote locales. In other words, to stay in these gorgeous chalets, you have to be able to drive in the snow. To rent a car in Japan, you should obtain an international driver’s licence in your home country.

If you prefer to stay in a walkable area that’s serviced by the ski shuttles, we have plenty of those chalets as well. Our villa specialists will be happy to help you find one that’s just right – feel free to reach out.

Our Favourite Hidden Gem Chalets

NISEKO

Niseko has been aptly dubbed the Aspen of Asia – but we’d argue that the real magic happens when you head outside the resorts. These chalets will make your trip to Niseko one for the books.

It doesn’t get much better than this: serene views of a tranquil Hokkaido river… framed by epic vistas of Mount Yotei. At Shion, these million-dollar views will be your constant companion, whether you’re cosying up by the fireside, tucking into a delicious feast, or cuddled up in bed after a day spent out in the snow.

This four-bedroom chalet is nestled in a quiet neighbourhood where the kids can run and play in the snow. And speaking of kids: the chalet has a cool bunk room that can sleep four, with colourful bean bags to lounge around on. Shion also has a serene tatami room for really getting into that Zen state of mind – which is easy to do anyway as this chalet is just completely immersed in nature.

Iori Niseko is something of an enigma – the chalet’s minimalist façade gives little clue as to what’s waiting inside. That makes it all the more rewarding to discover the graceful décor and out-of-this-world views hidden within. The chalet is the joint collaboration of 22eme and Makoto Nakayama – the latter also designed the gorgeous Mukashi Mukashi and Millesime chalets in Hirafu.

While the chalet’s design spells designer chic, its surroundings are nothing short of idyllic. Iori Niseko is located in a tranquil area outside Hirafu, surrounded by forest and sensational views looking out to Mount Yotei. As Niseko continues to expand, more chalets have begun to pop up in the area but for now, it remains a wonderfully relaxing setting where you can feel at one with nature.

Stunning, secluded – Sena. Surrounded by peace, privacy, and endless stretches of pure white snow, Sena is one of the most amazing chalets in Japan… and one of our personal favourites. The chalet occupies a five-hectare plot overlooking the Shiribetsu River. The photos are gorgeous but trust us – this incredible chalet is even more beautiful in person.

The property features extensive windows designed to showcase the surrounding wilderness. The living areas are large and inviting and the three bedrooms offer the perfect retreat after a day spent out in the snow. The serene bathtub looking over the snow-covered forest is yet another highlight.

With its striking design and impeccable craftsmanship, it’s little wonder that Gen-Myo has garnered several awards and recognitions. Fittingly, the chalet’s name means “superb skilfulness” in Japanese. The chalet comprises three blocks connected through “bridges.” Each of these three wings is framed by full wall windows and an engawa-style terrace which runs the full width of the house. These elements create a stunning connection with the surrounding nature – a key component of Japanese architecture.

Besides its flawless design, Gen-Myo wows with its spectacular surroundings. The chalet is surrounded by pristine Hokkaido woodlands and a handful of other chalets, with a natural spring gurgling right on the property. Jaw-dropping views of Mount Yotei add a final flourish.

At Hiyoku, the graceful design of the chalet and the natural beauty that surrounds are in perfect harmony. With its elegant steel frame design and seemingly endless windows, it should come as little surprise that the chalet has won several architectural awards.

Hiyoku is hidden in the tranquil fields of Tomikawa and offers the rarest of views. In a single glance, you’ll be able to admire the neighbouring farm, serene Shiribetsu River, and mighty Mount Yotei towering in the distance. The flowing river also contributes to the property’s soothing soundtrack. While you are more than welcome to admire the views curled up by the fireside, we also recommend heading out on snowshoes or cross-country skis. Both activities are available right on your doorstep.

Nestled amid tranquil birch and pine trees, Yukihyo is the perfect escape from the noise, traffic, and stress of life in the city. Through its full wall windows, this striking chalet offers front row views to Hokkaido’s flora and fauna – the chalet’s name means “snow leopard” in Japanese. The glass framed living areas feel like a private gallery space; the ever-changing landscape its masterpiece.

Yukihyo has everything you’d want from a modern chalet: cutting-edge design, curated furnishings, and all the little comforts and conveniences modern day travellers have grown accustomed to. The beautifully sculpted chalet both stands out and blends in with its serene surroundings. It’s a beautiful place to retreat to after a day spent exploring the slopes at Grand Hirafu, Niseko Village, or Annupuri – all three resorts are within a 10-minute drive.

FURANO

Located about four hours northeast from Niseko, Furano is more quiet compared to its famous neighbour. Blessed with amazing powder snow – it’s said to be even better than the pow in Niseko – Furano is every winter lover’s dream. This chalet amid the woods allows you to experience the region’s frosty beauty to the fullest.

Experience a real-life winter wonderland at Furano Peak. This beautiful chalet is surrounded by forest, ensuring a peaceful stay away from all the hubbub. The views looking out to the snow during winter are nothing short of enchanting. While the chalet is hidden amid the trees, it’s also just down the road from the Furano ski zone. This means you can alternate between slopeside action and sweet seclusion with ease.

From its minimalist façade to its comfortable interiors, Furano Peak exudes an effortless elegance that’s hard to resist. Nothing about this chalet is garish or “too much.” Instead, every piece of furniture and material has been chosen with great care to deliver a seamless experience and a sublimely comfortable stay. With living areas cleverly placed on the upper floor, you’ll have front row seats to the tranquil beauty that surrounds.

HAKUBA

Offering over 200 ski runs ranging from mellow to mind-bending, Hakuba will appeal to skiers of all levels. With 10 resorts, the Hakuba Valley is well spread out. Each of these gorgeous chalets makes for the most fabulous homebase amidst all that pow.

Feast your eyes on one of the most impressive chalets in the Hakuba Valley. Zenrinso is a lavishly large six-bedroom chalet nestled in the Wadano forest. This exclusive neighbourhood offers prime access to the Sakka slopes without forgoing privacy. Skiers will rejoice in the easy slopeside access while homebodies will appreciate the beautiful and peaceful scenery.

Throughout its impressive square footage, Zenrinso exudes style, elegance, and grace. The chalet fuses classic Japanese design with cutting edge modern style and the end result is nothing short of stunning. The whole family will feel right at home in this hidden retreat, with impeccably designed living areas bringing the whole group together after a day spent out on the slopes. The chalet also has a strikingly stylish bunk room that can sleep four guests.

Just as the name suggests, the Wadano Woods chalets are nestled amid the forest. These timber chalets promote a wonderful connection to nature, from their Hokkaido pine panelling to their serene surroundings. The chalets have that wonderful feel of an authentic log cabin – it’s the perfect place to cuddle up inside when it’s cold outdoors.

The Wadano Woods chalets have everything you need for a cosy and comfortable stay, including an impeccably appointed kitchen, comfortable living areas, and a well laid out ski room. Our favourite feature are the views – we could get lost in those snow-covered vistas for hours.

This hidden gem of a chalet is positioned in the Kamishiro neighbourhood, across the river from the lively Echoland district. In fact, Eminence comprises two twin chalets positioned side by side. Each one is completely self-contained, but it’s also great to have the option to book two neighbouring properties if you’re travelling with a bigger group.

Kamishiro is a peaceful area, and the chalets are framed by tranquil forest views which are lovely during winter. The living areas are cleverly placed on the upper floor so you can really soak up the scenery. Provided you have some wheels to get around, Eminence is a great homebase for exploring the Hakuba Valley – the Hakuba 47 ski lifts are just a two-minute drive away and Goryu is just a bit further out.
